Jenson Button prevê que a decisão de Fernando Alonso sobre a sua aposentadoria será influenciada pela experiência do piloto espanhol na Fórmula 1. Com 45 anos e um histórico de campeonatos conquistados em 2005 e 2006, a conversa sobre o futuro de Alonso torna-se inevitável, especialmente com a expectativa de que uma decisão possa ser anunciada nas próximas semanas.
Alonso, que atualmente compete pela Aston Martin, parece cada vez mais inclinado a continuar na busca pelo terceiro título mundial. Button, que é seu antigo colega e agora trabalha como embaixador da Aston Martin, comentou sobre a situação, afirmando que a saída anterior de Alonso da Fórmula 1 terá um impacto significativo na sua decisão futura. “Fernando’s future is a hot topic of conversation right now,” escreveu Button. “I have no idea whether he’s going to commit to another year in the sport, but I do know whenever he does decide to retire he’ll be rightly regarded as one of the true F1 greats – though personally I hope he’ll stay a little longer.”
Button também refletiu sobre a dificuldade de tomar decisões sobre o futuro. “I know how difficult it is to decide your future, and he’s been there once before. He left the sport and came back, so he obviously left too early. Now, he will make sure that he’s 100 per cent certain that he doesn’t want to be in the sport before he leaves,” acrescentou. Para Button, Alonso ainda tem muito a oferecer na Fórmula 1. “Fernando’s still got so much more to give in F1. I would love to see him in an Aston Martin fighting for wins. That’s where he should be, and it’s where this team is aiming to be.”
Ao falar sobre as habilidades de Alonso, Button comparou-o a Michael Schumacher, elogiando a competitividade do espanhol. “The biggest compliment I can give Fernando is that fighting him was very similar to fighting with Michael Schumacher. In my experience against them it would be hard but fair – it was on the limit every time and I loved that,” disse. Ele acrescentou que a luta contra os melhores pilotos, como Alonso e Schumacher, é o que cada piloto deseja.
Button também destacou o estilo de condução único de Alonso, afirmando que “Fernando drives like no one else. He’s aggressive, he can adapt brilliantly, and it’s been that way all through his career.” Com a próxima prova a aproximar-se, as expectativas sobre a performance de Alonso e a sua decisão futura continuam a aumentar.
