Volkswagen has once again surprised by lifting the veil on one of its boldest projects in recent times. It is called ID. UNYX 09 and represents a new attempt by the German brand to redefine its design language in the electric sedan segment, betting on a more expressive, more technological proposal that is clearly adapted to the Chinese market.
An electric sedan that breaks with the past
Even before the official start of the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, the Volkswagen Group decided to preview some of its most important innovations. Among them, the new ID. UNYX 09 stands out as one of the most intriguing, positioning itself as a large electric sedan with a very distinct appearance, far removed from the more conservative image of models like the Jetta or even other sedans sold by the brand in China.
Developed with the support of XPeng, the new model results from the joint venture Volkswagen Anhui, created in partnership with JAC Motors, in which Volkswagen currently holds a majority position. This collaboration allowed the brand to accelerate the development of the project, which took only two years to be completed.

Bolder design and its own personality
The ID. UNYX 09 clearly departs from the more rounded aesthetic language of models like the ID.7. Here, the approach is bolder and more visually striking.
The front features split headlights, with thin upper LED light signatures framing an illuminated Volkswagen logo. A particularly unusual element is the black strip that runs across the front bumper and extends over the fenders and doors, reinforcing the model's visual identity.
Additionally, the A-pillars, roof, and side mirrors also appear in black, creating a strong contrast and giving the overall design a more sophisticated and almost conceptual look.
Top-of-the-range dimensions
At around five meters in length, the new ID. UNYX 09 is slightly larger than the ID.7, positioning it as a potential flagship sedan for Volkswagen in China.
The generous proportions convey a clear ambition: to offer a product with top presence in a market where sedans continue to hold significant weight and where local competition is becoming increasingly aggressive.

An electric vehicle developed with Chinese DNA
Just like the previously revealed ID. UNYX 08 SUV, this new sedan has been specifically designed for the Chinese market. This is evident not only in the design but also in the very philosophy of the project.
Volkswagen seems to have realized that, to regain ground in China, it needs to go beyond simply adapting global models. The ID. UNYX 09 is an example of this: a car created with its own identity, without directly relying on European or North American references.
Performance components reinforce premium image
Although the brand has not yet released complete technical specifications, some visible details suggest an ambitious positioning. The model comes equipped with:
- 21-inch wheels
- Pirelli P Zero tires
- Brembo brakes
These elements help reinforce the perception of quality and performance, although concrete data on power, battery, or range is still lacking.

A massive offensive to reclaim China
The launch of the ID. UNYX 09 is part of a much broader strategy by the Volkswagen Group to try to regain competitiveness in China, a market where it has been losing strength.
The brand is preparing what it describes as its largest product offensive ever in the region, with more than 20 electrified models planned for this year alone and an additional 30 new vehicles by the end of the decade.
A future just for China
All indications are that the ID. UNYX 09 will not be sold outside the Chinese market. And that makes sense: in addition to being developed to meet very specific tastes and needs of China, a model of this kind could directly clash with the positioning of the ID.7 in other markets.
Still, this launch leaves an inevitable feeling: Volkswagen is taking more risks with design in China than in Europe or the United States.
A sedan that shows a new path
At a time when SUVs dominate almost everything, the emergence of a large electric sedan, with bold visuals and rapid development, shows that there is still room to reinvent this type of vehicle.
The ID. UNYX 09 may never leave China, but it represents something bigger than just a simple regional launch: it is a sign that Volkswagen is willing to change its approach to become relevant again where it needs it most.
