For years, Smart was synonymous with small, urban, and almost minimalist cars. Today, that identity is becoming increasingly distant. After entering the world of SUVs, the brand is now taking another unexpected step: it is presenting its first sedan.

It is called Smart #6 and represents a clear shift in positioning — not only in format but also in ambition.

A sedan… and quite large

The new model is far from the brand’s original concept. At about 4.9 meters in length, it is positioned above models like the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, precisely the rivals it aims to compete with in the Chinese market.

Visually, it bets on a modern and technological language, with light bars at the front and rear, an active aerodynamic spoiler, and even a LiDAR sensor on the roof — a clear sign of focus on advanced driver assistance systems.

Interior still a secret, but predictable

Smart has not yet revealed images of the interior, but it is not difficult to imagine what is coming.

If we look at the brand’s most recent models, it is likely that the #6 will strongly emphasize large screens and a dominant digital experience — possibly with a layout that occupies a significant part of the dashboard.

A hybrid in a brand that is electric in Europe

Here comes the biggest surprise.

While in Europe Smart positions itself as a 100% electric brand, the #6 uses a plug-in hybrid system. The setup combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor and a battery of over 40 kWh.

The result is a combined power of 429 hp — a quite competitive figure for the segment.

Impressive range… but with caveats

According to the data released, the model can travel about 285 km in electric mode. The total combined range exceeds 1,800 km.

However, these values were measured according to the Chinese CLTC cycle, known for being more optimistic than the European WLTP. In practice, it is expected that the real numbers will be more conservative.

A model that will not come to Europe

Despite the potential interest, the Smart #6 has no planned release outside of China.

And that makes sense. The Chinese market has a strong demand for high-range plug-in hybrids, while in Europe the brand’s strategy continues to focus on pure electric vehicles.

A completely transformed brand

The Smart #6 is perhaps the best example of the brand’s radical transformation.

From small urban cars to sedans nearly five meters long.
From extreme simplicity to advanced technology.
From a European niche to a global focus based in China.

Smart has ceased to be what it was — and is clearly comfortable with that.
