On Saturday morning, the NTT IndyCar Series held its second practice session in preparation for qualifying later in the day. The weather at Laguna Seca was noticeably warmer, with the session taking place at 10:00 a.m. As a result of the higher temperatures, lap times were slower compared to Friday’s race, and drivers struggled to maintain control on the 2.24-mile track. However, Colton Herta seemed to handle the conditions better, setting the fastest lap time of 1:08.2300. Herta, who had an impressive performance on Friday, appears to be a strong contender for the weekend. Will Power and Alex Palou closely followed, securing the second and third best times, respectively. Scott McLaughlin, the fastest driver on Friday, continued to show his speed by setting the fourth fastest time. Pato O’Ward initially held the top position but dropped to fifth as the session progressed. David Malukas made progress in his #66 car, gaining more confidence behind the wheel after missing the first half of the season. He finished just below Josef Newgarden, who had a surprisingly poor run in the morning session. The session had its share of incidents, with Christian Rasmussen losing control of his #20 car at Turn 10. Rasmussen collided with the tire barriers, causing significant damage to the rear left and front left of his vehicle. Although he was seen and released from the medical center, his car will require extensive repairs before qualifying later in the afternoon. Sting Ray Robb and Kyffin Simpson also had setbacks during the session, with Robb getting stuck in the gravel and Simpson needing assistance after spinning. The Corkscrew section of the track proved particularly challenging, with several drivers locking their brakes while navigating the sharp turn. Fortunately, most were able to regain control before the steep 59-foot drop, but some went off track and ended up in the dirt by the side of the road. The knockout qualifying for the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. Pacific time and will determine the starting grid for Sunday’s afternoon race.
