Mercedes has been facing difficulties since the introduction of the new “ground effect” regulations in 2022. They adopted a unique approach with a zero sidepod concept, but this proved to be a disastrous decision. In 2024, they made some changes and designed a more conventional car, but still couldn’t find a solution.

Everything changed for Mercedes at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix. With their updated W15, they dominated qualifying, with George Russell securing pole position. He then finished the unpredictable race in third place. This unexpected success raises the question of whether Mercedes’ performance in Montreal was a one-off or if they have finally unlocked the hidden potential of the W15.

During a press interview in Canada, including GrandPrix247, team boss Toto Wolff expressed caution in making bold predictions. He emphasized the unpredictable nature of the sport and how things can change quickly. However, he acknowledged that Mercedes has been on a positive trajectory in recent races. They have made improvements and added new parts to the car that are working well. Wolff is hopeful that this positive momentum will continue.

When asked about the next update for the car, Wolff jokingly mentioned a two-second improvement. However, he could not provide specific details. He explained that when things work harmoniously together, the overall flow structure becomes more efficient, leading to improved performance. Mercedes has gradually optimized various aspects of the car, and the next step in Barcelona is expected to further enhance their performance.

Wolff also addressed the previous comments he made about the correlation problems between his simulations and the track data. He emphasized that there is no easy solution in Formula 1 and that constant work is necessary to understand the problems. The team had difficulties with the performance and drivability of the car, but managed to identify the missing piece in the puzzle. Once they solved this problem, they saw a significant improvement.

In conclusion, Mercedes has faced challenges since the introduction of the new regulations. However, their performance in the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix suggests that they may have finally found a solution. Toto Wolff remains cautiously optimistic about their progress and expects the next update in Barcelona to further enhance their performance.
