“Unthinkable Triumph!” Pierre Gasly Celebrates Alpine’s Stunning Comeback to 6th in Constructors’ Championship

In what seemed an impossible feat at the start of the 2024 Formula 1 season, Pierre Gasly and Alpine pulled off a stunning turnaround to claim sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship, a result the Frenchman described as nothing short of “unthinkable.” With a disastrous start to their campaign and zero points from the opening five races, the Enstone-based squad appeared destined for obscurity. But a seismic shift in performance has turned their season into one of the sport’s most inspiring comeback stories.

A Season That Started in Shambles

The opening rounds of the season painted a bleak picture for Alpine. Weight issues plagued their car, leaving them languishing in the bottom half of the standings. By the time the Miami Grand Prix rolled around, Alpine had managed to address their technical flaws, but their position in ninth place, with a mere 14 points after 20 rounds, was a testament to how deep the hole they’d fallen into was.

However, Brazil became the turning point. Against all odds, Alpine secured a jaw-dropping double podium finish, a result that catapulted them to sixth in the Constructors’ standings. The momentum didn’t stop there, as Gasly delivered standout performances in Qatar (a top-five finish) and Abu Dhabi (seventh place), ensuring Alpine edged out Haas by a razor-thin margin of seven points.

Gasly’s Leadership in the Storm

“Sixth in the Constructors was unthinkable at the start of the year,” Gasly reflected. “The lows of the season were extremely low, but the highs were unbelievably high.” Gasly praised the team for their resilience, citing improvements within the factory as the foundation for their remarkable resurgence.

“There was a lot of progress inside the factory,” he continued. “It doesn’t translate onto the track immediately, but we’ve reaped the rewards now. This result shows the mentality and spirit inside Alpine is exactly where it needs to be.”

Flawless Execution and Zero Damage

Gasly’s personal contribution to the team’s success wasn’t just about collecting points. The French driver achieved an exceptional feat: completing the entire season without incurring any damage to his car. “There were three targets: finish sixth in the Constructors, secure 10th in the Drivers’, and keep my nose clean. We’ve achieved all three,” Gasly said proudly. “And yes, Flavio [Briatore] will love the $10 million in extra prize money we delivered by finishing sixth.”

This meticulous driving not only helped Alpine financially but also cemented Gasly’s reputation as one of the grid’s most reliable drivers in a chaotic season.

The Abu Dhabi Finale: A Fight to the Finish

Gasly’s grit and determination were on full display during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He narrowly avoided the Turn 1 chaos involving Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri, seizing third place in the early stages of the race. Though ultimately unable to secure a podium, he masterfully defended his position against Nico Hülkenberg while managing his tires in a grueling stint on hard compounds.

“I couldn’t afford a single mistake,” Gasly admitted. “The entire race, Nico was within two seconds, keeping relentless pressure on me. But we made it happen.”

What’s Next for Alpine?

While Alpine’s sixth-place finish may not rival the title-winning highs of other teams, it marks a pivotal moment in the team’s journey. The extra prize money, combined with Gasly’s consistent performance, lays a solid foundation for future growth.

As the curtain falls on the 2024 season, one thing is certain: Pierre Gasly’s leadership and Alpine’s never-say-die attitude have etched their names into one of Formula 1’s greatest tales of redemption.

Will they carry this momentum into 2025? With this level of determination, it’s anyone’s guess.
