Toyota Dominates Stage 2 of Dakar 2026: Nasser Al-Attiyah Takes Commanding Overall Lead!

In a stunning display of power and precision, Toyota has completely locked out the top five positions in Stage 2 of the 2026 Dakar Rally, sending shockwaves through the competition. Seth Quintero, the American speedster, seized the day and the stage victory, while Dacia’s Nasser Al-Attiyah surged to the forefront of the overall standings, setting the stage for an electrifying battle ahead.

After a lackluster start at the 48th edition of the Dakar in Yanbu, Toyota’s Hilux pick-up roared back to life during the grueling 400 km trek to Al-Ula. The Japanese powerhouse dominated the day, with both its South African team and World Rally-Raid squad maintaining a relentless pace. Saood Variawa initially led the charge, holding the lead for the first 100 km before Quintero unleashed his full potential at the fourth checkpoint, overtaking Variawa at 143 km.

Despite Variawa’s strong start, he ultimately fell behind, losing a staggering seven minutes as Quintero raced ahead. The young driver crossed the finish line with a triumphant margin of 1 minute and 42 seconds, marking just his third career stage win in the grueling Dakar’s Ultimate category. Variawa’s early promise turned into a cautionary tale as last year’s runner-up, Henk Lategan, capitalized on the situation, securing second place as he powered through the final stretch.

Meanwhile, defending champion Yazeed Al-Rajhi exhibited resilience, clawing his way back from a disastrous opening stage where he lost nearly 30 minutes due to a combination of blunders and penalties, guiding his Overdrive-run Toyota to a commendable third place. The drama continued as two-time bike champion Toby Price clinched a 1-2-4 finish for Toyota’s W2RC team, finishing just ahead of Joao Ferreira, who battled through a series of punctures.

On the non-Toyota front, legendary nine-time World Rally champion Sebastien Loeb showcased his skill, finishing sixth in his Dacia Sandrider. He was closely followed by teammate Al-Attiyah, who had a rocky start but recovered to secure a solid position. Further down the leaderboard, father-son duo Michal and Eryk Goczal rounded out the top ten for Energylandia, with Variawa sandwiched between them after his late-stage struggles.

Guillaume de Mevius, the Stage 1 victor, faced a setback, finishing 11th in his X-raid Mini and conceding more than eight minutes to the leaders. Ford struggled as well, with Prologue victor Mattias Ekstrom finishing 12th after losing over nine minutes, while rally icon Carlos Sainz Sr. could only manage a disappointing 14th place.

In the overall standings, Al-Attiyah now holds the coveted lead, albeit by a razor-thin margin of just seven seconds over Quintero, who rebounded impressively after finishing 18th in the opening stage due to a two-minute speeding penalty. Mini’s de Mevius is in hot pursuit, sitting third and only 1 minute and 9 seconds behind the leader, while Lategan remains a close fourth, trailing by 19 seconds. Loeb’s impressive performance has positioned two Dacia drivers within striking distance of the podium, while Toyota’s Ferreira and Price follow closely behind.

As the competition heats up, all eyes will be on the next stages of this legendary rally. The battle for supremacy is far from over, and with Toyota’s resounding performance, the racing world is buzzing with anticipation for what’s to come. The Dakar Rally is proving to be an exhilarating showcase of skill, speed, and unyielding determination!
