World Superbike (WorldSBK) recently announced that a new entry class will be introduced in place of the current junior series World SSP300 starting from the 2026 season. Since 2017, the FIM Supersport 300 championship has served as the junior category, successfully providing aspiring riders with a more accessible opportunity to start their careers in motorcycles. The governing body, Dorna, is now taking the next step to further increase the importance of this entry category both in terms of sport and commerce. The ultimate goal is to provide riders with a seamless transition to the intermediate class, WorldSSP, within the Superbike series. This transition period aims to equip young riders with the skills and resources necessary to prepare them for the next level in the SBK pyramid, reducing the performance gap between the classes through the implementation of new regulations. The new class will feature more powerful engines, and additional details will be announced gradually by the SBK Commission throughout the year. These changes to the bikes aim to attract a wider range of manufacturers to participate in the junior series. The 2026 start date allows manufacturers sufficient time to prepare for this transition. The SBK press release emphasizes that manufacturer involvement will enable all stakeholders to adapt to the new technical and sporting regulations while showcasing machines that align with a growing market segment. Notable Dutch rider Jeffrey Buis serves as an important example of the significant leap between the junior and intermediate classes. After winning the WorldSSP300 series championship twice in 2020 and 2023, Buis struggled to make an impact in the WorldSSP class in 2022, failing to score a single point throughout the season before being replaced by Tom Booth-Amos.
