Renger van der Zande Triumphs in Nail-Biting Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach!

In a heart-stopping showcase of skill and strategy, Renger van der Zande powered his way to victory at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, clinching a monumental win for Acura Meyer Shank Racing. The Dutch racing prodigy, behind the wheel of the #93 Acura ARX-06, demonstrated remarkable composure through a series of late restarts, ultimately crossing the finish line just 0.818 seconds ahead of his nearest rival, Frederick Vesti in the #31 Whelen Cadillac V-Series.R.

This thrilling triumph marks Acura's first win at the prestigious Long Beach circuit since 2009, a feat that has electrified fans and competitors alike. Van der Zande's victory is a personal milestone as well; it's his third IMSA win on this iconic street circuit, having previously triumphed in 2022 and 2024 driving for Cadillac.

The race unfolded on a challenging 1.968-mile, 11-turn temporary street circuit, where van der Zande faced relentless pressure from Vesti during the closing laps. Meanwhile, Laurens Vanthoor's #6 Porsche 963 from Porsche Penske Motorsport secured the third podium spot, narrowly edging out teammate Felipe Nasr in the #7 sister car. The BMW M Team WRT's Sheldon van der Linde finished in fifth place, showcasing the intense competition throughout the field.

In the GTD class, Vasser Sullivan's dynamic duo of Aaron Telitz and Benjamin Pedersen took home the top honors in their #12 Lexus RC F GT3, leaving Turner Motorsport's Robby Foley and Patrick Gallegher to settle for second. Conquest Racing's Albert Costa and Manny Franco rounded out the podium, capturing a well-deserved third place.

The race commenced with a split start for the GTP and GTD classes, led by Nick Yelloly and Robert Wickens, respectively. However, chaos erupted early when the #81 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R, driven by Henrik Hedman of DragonSpeed, spun into the Turn 6 tire barriers, prompting an early yellow flag. With roughly 1 hour and 33 minutes remaining, the teams engaged in a strategic dance of pit stops and driver changes, with JDC-Miller Motorsports opting for a driver swap that brought Porsche specialist Lauren Heinrich into the mix.

As the race progressed, Jack Aitken in the Cadillac Whelen took over the second position from Marco Wittman, while the Winward Racing's Russell Ward made his move in the GTD class, overtaking Danny Formal just minutes into the race. Despite facing challenges, Aitken managed to leap ahead of Yelloly, seizing the race lead with 1 hour and 23 minutes to go.

However, the drama was far from over. With just over an hour remaining, the #25 BMW of Phillip Eng collided with Heinrich, sending debris onto the track and prompting another yellow flag. As the race resumed, van der Zande found himself in a commanding position, showcasing his prowess as he navigated through traffic.

In a gripping finale, van der Zande maintained his lead despite intense pressure from Vesti, who was hot on his heels in the closing minutes. As the clock ticked down, the stakes couldn't have been higher. Nonetheless, van der Zande held his ground, crossing the finish line to secure a sensational victory.

As the celebrations began, Telitz and Pedersen celebrated their GTD class win, further solidifying Vasser Sullivan's dominance in the series. The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach not only delivered exhilarating racing but also highlighted the incredible talent and resilience of its participants. The roar of the engines and cheers of the crowd will resonate long after this unforgettable race.
