Nissan has once again looked to its past to design the future. At the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, the Japanese brand unveiled the new Terrano PHEV Concept, a robust and electrified SUV that revives an iconic name from the 80s and 90s — now reinterpreted for the era of hybrid mobility.
A historic name returns with a new mission
The Nissan Terrano was originally used in versions of the Pathfinder outside the United States. Now, it returns in the form of a concept that anticipates an imminent production model.
Nissan positions this new Terrano as an SUV with an adventurous spirit, strongly oriented towards off-road capabilities, but adapted to modern efficiency demands.

Robust and functional design
Visually, the Terrano PHEV stands out for its classic and functional approach to off-road design:
- vertical and imposing front
- short overhangs for better approach and departure angles
- lower protections and integrated tow hooks
- rectangular LED lighting with a distinctive signature
Details such as additional lights on the hood and on the roof luggage compartment reinforce its adventurous vocation.
Ready for demanding terrains
The concept features several elements typical of a true off-road vehicle:
- plastic protections on the wheel arches
- air intakes on the hood
- rear spare wheel
- ladder for roof access
The set suggests a vehicle designed for off-road use, focusing on functionality.

Plug-in hybrid powertrain
Although Nissan has not released detailed technical data, it confirmed that the model uses a PHEV (plug-in hybrid) system, in line with the brand’s strategy to combine electrification with versatility.
A possible glimpse of the future Pathfinder?
There is a possibility that the Terrano Concept anticipates the next generation of the Nissan Pathfinder or even influences the future range of traditional chassis SUVs from the brand.
Second concept reinforces bet on China
In addition to the Terrano, Nissan also presented the Urban SUV PHEV Concept, a proposal more oriented towards the road and a younger audience.
This model bets on:
- more fluid design
- absence of traditional grille
- continuous horizontal lighting
- more aerodynamic profile
China as a laboratory for innovation
Nissan emphasizes that the Chinese market is now a strategic development center, not only in volume but also in innovation.
Production already on the horizon
The brand confirmed that production versions of these concepts are expected to be presented within a year, along with other electric and hybrid models.
