MG is preparing an electric city model to compete with the Renault 5 E-Tech, which is expected to hit the market in 2028 and will be designed in the UK.
The new model, which is expected to be designated as MG 2, will sit below the MG4 hatchback and will be the new entry-level model for the British brand, which has recently been bolstered by the IM 5, IM 6, and MG S5.
According to “Autocar,” the director of MG in the UK, David Allison, confirmed that the new 100% electric model will have a competitive price compared to the competition, below £23,000, or €26,550.
Although he did not reveal technical details, all indications are that the new MG will utilize the same scalable electric modular platform from SAIC that is used by the MG 4.
It is likely that the new MG 2 will be compared to the Renault 5, which is equipped with a single 150 hp motor and offers a maximum range of 400 km with a 52 kWh battery.
When asked about the expected arrival of the new electric model to the market, which will soon see a greater offering with the arrival of the VW ID.2, as well as more affordable models from Cupra and Skoda, David Allison noted that, “the new model will still take a few years to reach the market.”
