Chief of the Mercedes Formula 1 team, Toto Wolff stated that he is not in a hurry to determine who will take the spot left by Lewis Hamilton, who will join Ferrari in 2025. Hamilton’s decision to activate a pause clause in his contract opened up an opportunity for George Russell to join the Mercedes team. Charles Leclerc from Ferrari and Lando Norris from McLaren recently signed contract extensions, while Max Verstappen is committed to Red Bull until 2028. However, speculations about Verstappen’s future arose after an investigation into allegations against Red Bull team boss Christian Horner. Although Horner was cleared of any wrongdoing, Verstappen’s father, Jos, suggested that his presence could cause division within the team. Jos Verstappen was seen talking to Wolff at the Bahrain Grand Prix, and there are rumors that they had dinner together earlier in the race weekend. Despite this, Wolff acknowledges that hiring Verstappen is unlikely due to the significant time difference between Mercedes and Red Bull at the start of the season. When asked about the possibility of Mercedes pursuing Verstappen, Wolff stated that drivers always choose the fastest car. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko also indicated that he will not prevent Verstappen from leaving the team. The situation with Red Bull is still evolving, and it seems unlikely that Verstappen will choose to leave the team that currently dominates Formula 1. Wolff had previously mentioned that Mercedes is open to considering a variety of options, from experienced drivers to young talents. The only current world champion available for 2025 is Fernando Alonso from Aston Martin, while Carlos Sainz, who will replace Hamilton at Ferrari, could also be a potential candidate. However, there are also speculations that Mercedes prospect Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who recently transitioned from FRECA to Formula 2, could be a surprising choice for promotion. Antonelli, a 17-year-old Italian, had a tough debut in Formula 2, with his Prema team finishing in 17th and 18th places in the race weekend and scoring only one point. Wolff acknowledged the team’s disappointing performance and stated that they are not in a hurry to make a decision about the drivers, as they will observe the upcoming races.
