Mercedes has revealed that a police investigation is underway to uncover the sender of an anonymous email alleging that the Formula 1 team is deliberately harming Lewis Hamilton. The email was directed to the same F1 personnel and accredited media representatives who previously received WhatsApp messages supposedly from Christian Horner in March. Hamilton’s recent comment, in which he expressed doubts about surpassing his teammate George Russell in the rankings again this season, seems to have triggered the email. Although Hamilton showed promising speed during the training sessions in Monaco and Canada, he was unable to replicate it when it mattered and ended up behind Russell. A person claiming to be associated with the Mercedes operation stated that the German team is employing “deceptive” tactics that could potentially put Hamilton’s life in danger. However, Mercedes CEO Toto Wolff refuted the accusations, emphasizing that the source of the message did not originate from within the team. “Therefore, it is not from a team member,” he clarified. “Receiving this kind of email, of which we have received several, is distressing. Especially when someone mentions death and other things like that.” Wolff stated that Mercedes is treating the accusations with the utmost seriousness and has involved the police to ensure that the responsible individual is held accountable. “So, in this specific case, I have instructed a thorough investigation. We have sent the police and are researching the involved IP address and phone. This kind of online abuse needs to stop. People cannot hide behind their phones or computers and subject teams or drivers to this kind of treatment.”
Wolff also dismissed the idea that Mercedes would have any intention of harming a driver’s chances and hindering the team’s pursuit of the Constructors’ Championship.
“I don’t know what some of the conspiracy theorists and crazies believe,” he added.
“Lewis has been part of the team for 12 years. We have a friendship. We trust each other. We want to end this positively. We want to celebrate the relationship.
“And if you don’t believe any of this, then you can believe that we want to win the Constructors’ World Championship and
part of winning the Constructors’ World Championship involves ensuring that our cars are victorious. So, for all those insane people out there, seek help.
The Austrian referred to those who invent such unthinkable claims under different identities as “cowards” who must be prepared to face the consequences of their accusations.
“There have always been these people, sitting in their rooms with their laptops on their chests, just typing,” he expressed.
“If people feel the need to abuse, attack, and hide behind a fake Instagram account or anything else, then they should come forward, reveal their true identities, and we will accept criticism and engage in a discussion. But hiding is not an option.
“There seems to be a lot of irrationality simply because we want to achieve success, and we want to achieve it with the most legendary driver the sport has ever seen.
“It is a privilege for us to work with Lewis, an incredible driver with a great personality who goes through ups and downs like any other athlete.
“I fully respect his decision to go to Ferrari, there are no hard feelings. The interaction we have within the team is positive, and therefore, any comments from outsiders about what is happening within the team are simply incorrect. But there are limits.
“I mean, if emails are being sent or phone numbers are being used for these messages, then the jokes stop and we will take action, whether successful or not.
“But there are limits to certain things, and all the abuse is not just directed at us, the team, and individuals, but it also affects Lewis and George. So, people should, and you can see Max [Verstappen] and Kelly [Piquet] speaking out about it. Those who engage in abuse are cowards because they hide.
“So, whatever is happening on social media, with all the positive aspects it brings and all the people who have gained a platform, there is also a negative side. I have no sympathy for those who engage in abuse, for the reasons I mentioned earlier.
