McLaren shakes the racing world: Mikkel Jensen named first driver for 2027 Hypercar programme

McLaren Unleashes Ambition: Mikkel Jensen Joins the Hypercar Revolution for 2027 WEC!

In an explosive announcement that has sent shockwaves through the motorsport world, McLaren has officially unveiled Mikkel Jensen as the inaugural driver for its groundbreaking World Endurance Championship (WEC) Hypercar program set to launch in 2027. This Danish dynamo, known for his time with Peugeot, is not just a driver; he’s a key player in the high-octane evolution of McLaren’s racing legacy.

Jensen, who has amassed invaluable experience in the GT and prototype scene, will pilot McLaren’s United Autosports team in the WEC next year while also spearheading the development of the highly anticipated, yet-to-be-named LMDh prototype. This cutting-edge vehicle is poised to succeed the iconic McLaren F1 GTR, a machine that has left an indelible mark on endurance racing history.

With an impressive track record of 26 starts for Peugeot’s Hypercar division, Jensen has already proven his mettle by clinching three podium finishes and achieving a commendable eighth place in the 2023 championship standings. At just 31 years old, Jensen’s transition to McLaren follows his recent partnership with United Autosports, where he is currently competing in the Oreca 07 LMP2 at the Asian Le Mans Series and gearing up for the prestigious Daytona 24 Hours.

“I’m extremely proud to be joining the world championship-winning McLaren family and excited to be a part of its Hypercar project from the early stages,” Jensen declared, his enthusiasm palpable. “Stepping onto the boulevard at the McLaren Technology Centre gives me goosebumps – it not only brings to life how much history McLaren has in Formula 1, but the 1995 Le Mans-winning F1 GTR reminds me that we have an incredible endurance story to continue.”

As McLaren sets its sights on dominating the WEC, it already boasts a presence in the LMGT3 division, with its 720S GT3 program managed by McLaren Automotive. However, in a strategic pivot, United Autosports will transition from managing this effort to fully focus on McLaren’s Hypercar ambitions starting in 2026. This move underscores McLaren’s commitment to competing at the highest levels of motorsport, including Formula 1 and IndyCar.

While the precise technical details of the new Hypercar remain closely guarded, insiders confirm that the vehicle will utilize a Dallara chassis paired with a powerful twin-turbo V6 hybrid engine. This combination is expected to deliver jaw-dropping performance as McLaren prepares to enter what many anticipate will be the most fiercely competitive season in WEC history.

James Barclay, McLaren’s endurance team principal, emphasized the significance of Jensen’s signing: “Announcing Mikkel is another important milestone in the formation of our new Hypercar team. He has already proven himself as one of the most competitive and well-rounded sportscar racing drivers in the world and will bring with him a wealth of experience from the Hypercar category.”

Barclay further added, “We are delighted to have a driver of Mikkel’s caliber, experience, and future potential. Like us, he is a true racer and is therefore a great fit with our philosophy on people and culture, which has been integral to McLaren Racing’s world championship-winning success in Formula 1. Our World Endurance Championship team is coming together nicely and Mikkel is a fantastic addition.”

As the countdown to 2027 begins, all eyes will be on McLaren as it embarks on this thrilling new chapter in endurance racing. With Mikkel Jensen leading the charge, the McLaren Hypercar program is already shaping up to be a formidable force. The stage is set for a high-speed showdown, and McLaren is ready to etch its name in the annals of motorsport history once again!
