Red Bull Escalates FIA Battle Over Max Verstappen’s Risk of Race Ban

Red Bull Racing has taken a bold step in their ongoing battle to protect their star driver, Max Verstappen, from a potential race ban due to accumulating penalty points. Team principal Christian Horner revealed that they proactively reached out to the FIA Race Director to raise concerns about rivals trying to manipulate situations to incriminate Verstappen.

Verstappen, with 11 penalty points before the Canadian Grand Prix, is teetering on the edge of a one-race ban, with just one more point needed to trigger the suspension. The recent incident at the Spanish Grand Prix, where Verstappen received a time penalty and three penalty points for a controversial move involving George Russell, has heightened Red Bull’s vigilance.

The drama unfolded as Russell attempted to overtake Verstappen, resulting in a clash that led to penalties for the Dutch driver. Despite starting on the front row in Canada, Verstappen struggled to challenge the Mercedes drivers throughout the race. However, a late Safety Car period stirred controversy when Russell accused Verstappen of overtaking illegally under Safety Car conditions.

Red Bull subsequently lodged protests against Russell, alleging unsportsmanlike conduct, but both were dismissed by the stewards. Horner expressed concerns about potential “gamesmanship” by rivals trying to entrap Verstappen, leading to the strategic move to involve the Race Director.

The tense situation has sparked a war of words between teams and drivers, with Verstappen expressing frustration at the constant scrutiny over his penalty points. Despite the off-track drama, Verstappen maintained his composure on the racing circuit, showcasing a strong performance over the weekend.

This incident marks the second time this season that Red Bull has protested against Russell, highlighting the escalating tensions between the two teams. The regulations governing such disputes are under scrutiny, with Horner emphasizing the need for clarity and fairness in the decision-making process.

As the battle for supremacy in Formula 1 intensifies, the spotlight remains firmly on Verstappen and Red Bull Racing, as they fight to navigate the complex web of rules and rivalries in the pursuit of championship glory.
