Max Verstappen’s Apology Controversy: Former Mercedes Chief Demands Proper Apology After Collision

In a dramatic turn of events, former Mercedes chief Norbert Haug has declared that Max Verstappen’s apology following the Spanish Grand Prix was lacking two crucial words, as he weighed in on the collision with George Russell. Haug, a key figure in Mercedes-powered teams during the 1990s and 2000s, emphasized the importance of a sincere apology in the aftermath of the incident that saw Verstappen handed a 10-second time penalty at the Spanish GP.

Haug, known for his involvement with Mercedes during their partnership with McLaren and the acquisition of Brawn GP in 2009, critiqued Verstappen’s apology to Sky Sports Germany, saying, “I couldn’t imagine that he would be punished like that. At least he apologized today. [The apology] misses two very simple words, right at the end: ‘Sorry, George.'”

The former vice president of Mercedes continued to urge the champion to make amends, stating, “That shouldn’t have happened. It’s a good start, but a nice ending is what makes everything, as we all know. That’s why I would have expected him to say, ‘I apologize to George, I apologize for my misconduct to the FIA, and to all the fans watching.’ He’s a person you admire, rightly so.”

Following the Spanish GP incident, Verstappen released a statement taking partial blame but falling short of a direct apology. Addressing the situation on Instagram, the champion admitted, “Our tyre choice to the end and some moves after the safety car restart fueled my frustration, leading to a move that was not right and shouldn’t have happened.”

Despite the ongoing debate surrounding the nature of Verstappen’s apology, the repercussions of his actions are undeniable, with the champion now trailing 49 points behind Oscar Piastri in the drivers’ standings. Verstappen’s moment of frustration has cost him dearly, sparking discussions on whether a proper apology to Russell and other parties involved is warranted.

As the Formula 1 season progresses, the spotlight remains on Verstappen’s controversial move and the aftermath that continues to unfold. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
