Maserati has once again looked to its past to reinforce its identity, marking a historic milestone: the issuance of the 100th Certificate of Authenticity from the Maserati Classiche program. The protagonist of this achievement is one of the most emblematic models in the brand’s history — the Maserati 3500 GT Vignale Convertible prototype.
A symbol of the Maserati legacy
This automobile, identified by chassis number 101505*, represents much more than a rare piece. It is the starting point of Maserati’s tradition of luxury convertibles, marking the birth of the open-air grand touring concept in the Modena brand.
Originally presented at the 1959 Turin Motor Show, the model was developed by Carrozzeria Vignale under the creative direction of Giovanni Michelotti. Produced in only five units, this prototype served as the basis for the later 3500 GT Vignale Convertible, of which around 250 units were manufactured until 1964.

The Maserati Classiche program
Established in 2021, the Maserati Classiche program has become a reference in the preservation of the brand’s heritage. Based in Modena, it offers support to collectors through specialized restoration and certification services.
The Certificate of Authenticity, awarded by a commission of experts, ensures the rigorous verification of each vehicle, based on historical documentation and detailed technical analysis.
Restoration True to Origin
The now-certified prototype underwent a complete restoration between 2023 and 2026, carried out in its hometown, with direct oversight from Maserati.
The work allowed the car to be returned to the state in which it was presented in 1959, preserving its historical and technical authenticity.
Pure Italian Design
One of the most striking elements of this model is its visual identity. The silver bodywork contrasts with an interior in shades of ivory and red, complemented by golden details, in a combination that reflects Vignale’s aesthetic signature.
The classic proportions — long hood and elegant rear — capture the essence of Italian design from the late 1950s.
Engineering to Match Elegance
Under the hood, the model hides a six-cylinder inline engine with 3.5 liters, fed by Weber carburetors, capable of delivering 235 hp.
Associated with a four-speed manual gearbox, this set allowed reaching about 235 km/h, an impressive value for the time.
The Beginning of an Iconic Lineage
This prototype laid the foundations for future convertibles from Maserati, a concept that remains present in current models, such as the GranCabrio.
The combination of performance, elegance, and driving pleasure has become a hallmark of the brand over the decades.
Presence at a Major International Event
The 3500 GT Vignale Convertible will be one of the main attractions at the Anantara Concorso Roma, from April 16 to 19, where about 70 of the rarest Italian cars will be on display.
A Heritage That Remains Alive
More than six decades later, this model continues to represent the best of Italian automotive engineering and design.
With the support of Maserati Classiche, the 3500 GT Vignale Convertible is not only preserved — it is celebrated as a fundamental piece of the brand’s history and global automotive culture.
