Mark Hughes examines the reasons behind Red Bull’s lack of dominance in Barcelona.

Mark Hughes examina as razões por trás da falta de domínio da Red Bull em Barcelona.

Update from the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League:

Wow! The recent session in Barcelona was absolutely captivating, as the scorching track presented some unexpected challenges. It also highlighted a feature of this year’s cars that may explain why Red Bull has been caught up by the pack in recent races. Contrary to expectations, the RB20 did not have the opportunity to show its full potential on this circuit. In fact, Red Bull seems to be on par with Ferrari and McLaren, and only slightly faster than Mercedes.

Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time, but his lap, along with Pierre Gasly’s fourth fastest time, occurred when the track grip was improving due to the dropping temperatures in the late afternoon. During those precious minutes, the track temperature decreased significantly by 3 degrees Celsius.

Achieving equal track conditions is a challenging task, but Mercedes seemed competitive, which should be a relief for the team following their strong performance in Montreal. There was concern that the specific characteristics of the Montreal track may have provided a misleading picture and that the demands of Barcelona would expose the car’s weaknesses. However, despite the overall imbalance among the cars, Mercedes seemed to handle the conditions better than most.

The balance issues faced by all teams are an intriguing aspect that, if examined closely, can provide valuable insights into the current situation. The severe track temperature of 46-47 degrees Celsius, combined with the long and fast corners, puts immense pressure on the tires, especially the front left. Additionally, all cars experienced varying degrees of understeer, further complicating the situation.

As the season progressed, it became evident that there is a greater conflict between the behavior of the cars in low and high-speed corners. Increasing the downforce of the bottom of the car, achieved by running the cars at lower heights, made them more sensitive and challenging to handle. Finding the right balance between front grip at low speeds and stability at high speeds is crucial. This year, the window of opportunity to achieve this balance is smaller than in previous years.

Running the cars at lower heights also exposed new problems. The balance issues mentioned earlier are one of them. Another problem is ensuring suspension compliance with irregularities, which is particularly challenging for Red Bull.

Barcelona showed that the RB20’s downforce advantage is no longer significant, and the balance issues faced by all teams may be even more pronounced for Red Bull compared to Ferrari or McLaren. This can be exacerbated by Red Bull’s suspension intolerance at very low ride heights.

Max Verstappen set the fastest sector times, marginally ahead of Lando Norris’ McLaren. However, this may not be as significant as usual, as there is always a compromise between speed in sector one and maintaining grip throughout the lap.

Optimizing sectors is not just about achieving the fastest time in each one. This was particularly challenging on Friday due to the extreme track temperatures and the balance conflicts mentioned earlier. Verstappen struggled with understeer, especially in Turns 3 and 4. Although he excelled in the high-speed Campsa (Turn 9), it would take Verstappen’s exceptional skills to extract a pole-worthy lap from the RB20.

The difficulty in finding the right balance became evident in Sergio Perez’s struggle. He stated that they made numerous changes and lost control of them, emphasizing the need to analyze and address these issues.

McLaren and Ferrari seemed to be more consistent and manageable. Norris and Sainz completed a long sequence of laps with soft tires simultaneously. Initially, Ferrari was consistently faster, but after seven laps, McLaren started to catch up and nullify Ferrari’s advantage. This suggests that both cars are on equal footing but have slightly different approaches to tire usage.

George Russell faced challenges with his brakes during the long sequences of laps, so a clear assessment of Mercedes’ performance can only be made based on Hamilton’s subsequent lap, after Verstappen, Norris, and Sainz. Although it may not have been as fast, it was still competitive.

The prospects for the weekend are intriguing. The forecast indicates that the temperature will be less extreme, which may reduce the heavy tire degradation observed on Friday. However, these extreme conditions provided valuable insights into performance dynamics. It is clear that achieving aerodynamic balance and extremely high downforce is a delicate and challenging task. Despite the difficulties, teams continue to relentlessly pursue this goal.

Gasly’s impressive performance in Alpine, although influenced by his race order, demonstrates the potential benefits of prioritizing balance. On the other hand, Aston Martin is facing difficulties, trailing about a second behind the pace. Fernando Alonso expressed disappointment, stating that they are far from finding the right balance and have a lot of work to do.

Barcelona surprised everyone, becoming a truly fascinating event.
