In an exciting battle for pole position at the Spanish Grand Prix, Lando Norris emerged victorious over Max Verstappen. Norris secured first place on the grid by just 0.020s in the final moments, securing his second pole position in Formula 1. Verstappen initially seemed to have the advantage, leading in the early stages of Q3, although he did not match his Q2 time. However, Norris managed to find an additional four tenths on his second lap, denying Verstappen and McLaren their first pole position since 2021. Norris described it as the best lap of his F1 career so far.
Lewis Hamilton, who recently faced defeats in qualifying against his Mercedes teammate George Russell, managed to reverse the trend by a narrow margin of 0.002s. Hamilton benefited from Russell’s slipstream during Q3, although Russell expressed dissatisfaction with Hamilton’s preparation lap strategy during their first lap. The Ferraris had a disappointing performance, with Charles Leclerc finishing 0.005s ahead of Carlos Sainz, but slightly behind the Mercedes duo. As a result, the Ferraris occupied the third row on the grid. Pierre Gasly’s Alpine was the surprise of qualifying, securing seventh place and finishing just one and a half tenths behind the third-placed driver. Gasly outperformed his teammate Esteban Ocon for the third consecutive weekend.
Sergio Perez, the second Red Bull driver, consistently stayed behind Verstappen during qualifying, with his best lap being six tenths slower. Despite beating Ocon and finishing in eighth place, Perez will start in 11th on the grid due to a penalty incurred in the Canadian Grand Prix for driving a damaged car back to the pits. Norris’ teammate, Oscar Piastri, qualified in last place in Q3 and will start in ninth. Piastri had his first lap deleted for exceeding track limits, but even without the exclusion, he would have only been the tenth fastest lap in Q3. Unfortunately, Piastri spun on his final attempt, going off into the gravel after Turn 12.
Fernando Alonso, the local hero, was just 0.019s away from qualifying for the final segment. However, due to Perez’s penalty, Alonso will start in 10th place. Perez will join him on the sixth row, alongside Valtteri Bottas, whose Sauber team managed to advance from Q1 for the first time since China. Bottas’ teammate, Zhou Guanyu, finished last in Q2, half a second behind Bottas and with drivers like Nico Hulkenberg (Haas) and Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) in between. Kevin Magnussen was the fastest driver to be eliminated in Q1, finishing eight tenths off the pace in the segment and missing out on advancing by half a tenth. Magnussen also gave a tow to his teammate Hulkenberg on the pit straight during the latter’s qualifying effort. Red Bull, which had both cars in Q3 in the previous qualifying session in Canada, was completely eliminated in the opening segment.
Yuki Tsunoda surpassed his teammate Daniel Ricciardo by two tenths, but could only secure 17th place, not advancing to the next round. Tsunoda expressed disbelief upon hearing the news over the team radio. Despite beating Logan Sargeant by three tenths in the battle to avoid last place on the grid, Williams’ main driver, Alex Albon, was far from threatening a spot in Q2. Sargeant, after completing his lap, informed the team that it had been a painful weekend, assuring them that he was doing his best. Sargeant is also being investigated for possibly impeding Stroll at Turn 10.
