The afternoon session in Barcelona on Saturday was filled with tension and highly competitive. Hamilton showcased his skill by leading the FP2 the day before. The latest update on the Mercedes W15 greatly benefited the British driver, and he made the most of it.
Although the most successful qualifier in F1 history failed to add to his impressive record of 104 pole positions today, he came incredibly close to the fastest time, finishing just 0.??s behind. He will start in P3, behind pole-sitter Lando Norris in McLaren and his rival Max Verstappen in P2.
After the session, Hamilton expressed his gratitude to the applauding crowd, stating, “I am very happy. I am extremely grateful to be among the top three. This year has been challenging, and there has been a lot of hard work from everyone at the factory. We are starting to see progress, and although I didn’t expect to secure the pole position, there were moments when we were close. So, I am just grateful to be where we are.”
Hamilton also acknowledged the efforts of the people working behind the scenes, saying, “It is truly a team effort. Every person at the factory plays a role in the design and creation of the new parts we bring to the races. The car is slowly evolving into a competitive machine, and I hope we can challenge the drivers ahead. George has also done a fantastic job, so I hope we can put pressure on the leaders tomorrow.”
Looking ahead to the race, Hamilton expressed his optimism, saying, “I am going into tomorrow with the intention to win. Starting in P3 is a favorable position, and our performance in long races looks promising. I believe the start will be crucial, and I hope to have a battle with Lando. I will remain optimistic.”
In a surprising turn of events, George Russell, who secured pole position in the Canadian GP, outperformed Hamilton this weekend. In Q3, he was only a fraction of a second behind his teammate and will start in P4, forming an all-Mercedes second row.
Speaking to reporters after qualifying, Russell expressed confidence in his chances in the race, saying: “The car has been performing exceptionally well and historically we have had success here in Barcelona. The difference between Lando and Max was greater than we expected.”
Russell stated: “We did well on the track, but on a demanding circuit like this, it is crucial to optimize tire performance and find those last tenths of a second, which is what Lando achieved today and we didn’t.
“Securing P3 and P4 is a commendable feat. On a circuit like this, car pace will always prevail. Although strategic decisions can influence tire wear, if you lack a tenth of a second in pace, you will always be overshadowed by superior speed.
“We will certainly try something different, but we are hopeful that we have the necessary pace to compete against Max and Lando. I believe we have the speed to challenge for victory. With the recent upgrades in the last three races, we are pleased to be back in the fight,” added Russell, who secured the team’s first podium of the season in the previous race in Canada.
Hamilton, in his final season with Mercedes before his move to Ferrari at the end of the year, has not won a Grand Prix since his victory in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in 2021. Russell’s triumph in the São Paulo Grand Prix in 2022 remains the team’s only victory under the current F1 regulations.
