Guillaume de Mévius triumphs in emotional Dakar Rally comeback with Mathieu Baumel’s inspiring return

Heart-Pounding Triumph at the 2026 Dakar Rally: De Mévius and Baumel Claim Emotional Victory!

In a breathtaking showcase of grit and determination, Guillaume de Mévius and his co-driver Mathieu Baumel have stormed to victory in the thrilling first full stage of the 2026 Dakar Rally, held in the unforgiving terrain of Saudi Arabia. The dynamic duo, racing for X-Raid Mini, has set the stage ablaze with their electrifying performance, leaving competitors in their dust and solidifying their status as leading contenders in the Ultimate category.

Completing the challenging Stage 1 around Yanbu, de Mévius crossed the finish line a staggering 40 seconds ahead of renowned driver Nasser Al-Attiyah, who was hot on their tail in his formidable Dacia. Martin Prokop rounded out the podium in a commendable third place, demonstrating his consistent prowess as the rally unfolds.

But what makes this victory especially poignant is the inspiring comeback of Mathieu Baumel, a four-time Dakar-winning navigator competing for the first time since a life-altering road accident last year that resulted in the loss of his right leg. Armed with a prosthetic limb, Baumel’s triumph on Stage 1 is not just a victory on the scoreboard; it’s a powerful testament to resilience and courage, adding a profound emotional weight to the win that resonates throughout the rally community.

Despite their impressive performance, de Mévius and Baumel faced a significant challenge during the stage as transponder issues rendered their live timing largely invisible to spectators and competitors alike. It was only at the finish line that their true speed was revealed, marking them as undisputed stage winners and leaving everyone in awe of their tenacity.

Nasser Al-Attiyah remains a formidable threat, finishing the day just 1 minute and 20 seconds behind the leaders, and is clearly in the mix for overall honors as the rally progresses. Meanwhile, Martin Prokop’s steady and trouble-free drive has him well-positioned in the general classification, further solidifying his reputation as a Dakar mainstay.

In a promising start for Ford, all their drivers managed to secure spots within the top ten, showcasing the manufacturer’s competitive spirit. Sébastien Loeb also navigated the stage successfully, avoiding pitfalls as the rally gears up for even more grueling challenges ahead.

As the excitement builds for what lies ahead in the heart of the 2026 Dakar Rally, the victory of de Mévius and Baumel serves as a rallying cry for all competitors, embodying the spirit of perseverance that defines this legendary race. The stage is set, and this rally is only just beginning!
