Toyota Motor’s global sales increased for the fifth consecutive month in May, setting a record for the month, as strong demand in markets like the U.S. remained high despite President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
According to the Japanese automaker revealed this Friday, global sales, which include Toyota’s luxury brand Lexus, rose 6.9% in May compared to the same month last year, reaching 898,721 vehicles sold, driven by strong demand in North America, China, and Japan, with sales in the U.S. increasing by about 11%.
However, the data revealed by Toyota indicates a 0.7% decline in global vehicle production in the same period of 2024, the first decline in five months, due to fewer working days in Japan.
These figures for Toyota’s global sales and production are revealed at a time when the Japanese government continues to negotiate with the Trump administration for a tariff exemption for its automotive companies, which are being affected by the U.S. president’s decision to impose an additional 25% tariff on imported cars into the United States
