The new regulations established by the FIA for the 2026 Formula 1 season have received mixed reactions within the F1 paddock. A Mercedes team driver expressed that the arrival of these regulations will bring a completely different experience. These new regulations will bring a balance between electric and internal combustion engines, resulting in a significant increase in top speed but a decrease in downforce in the corners.

George Russell, a Mercedes driver, stated that the cars will undergo noticeable changes due to the decrease in downforce generation, resulting in slower speeds in the corners. Russell also acknowledged that in the world of motorsport, sacrifices must be made to achieve certain goals. Currently, the cars are reaching their peak, with expectations of even better performance next season under the current regulations. However, with the introduction of the new regulations in 2026, teams will have to start from scratch to stand out.

The Technical Director of Mercedes also offered insights into the team’s current approach to improving the performance of their car, the W15. According to James Allison, Mercedes is on the right track and has gained a solid understanding of the 2024 challenger. The team is taking a proactive approach, quickly implementing updates to stay ahead of their competitors. Allison mentioned that the team is determined to move the car forward in the coming weeks and months.

Despite currently being ranked fourth in the constructors’ championship, Mercedes has shown strong performance in the Canadian GP, earning the majority of points as a team. They aim to maintain this positive momentum in the upcoming races in Barcelona and Austria, with the goal of securing more podium finishes and accumulating additional points.
