Formula 1 drivers seek changes in the ‘ridiculous’ penalty points system.

Pilotos da Fórmula 1 buscam alterações no sistema de pontos de penalidade ‘ridículo’.

Logan Sargeant, a driver for Williams Racing, expressed his frustration with the Formula 1 penalty points system ahead of the Miami Grand Prix. He called for a review of the system, stating that its implementation is “incredibly frustrating” and “somewhat ridiculous.”

During the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, Sargeant received two penalty points on his FIA Super License in a controversial manner. The penalty was given for overtaking Nico Hulkenberg during a safety car period. The decision was based on the assessment that Sargeant was slightly behind the German driver at Safety Car Line 1 when the Haas car exited the pits.

Speaking to the press in Miami, Sargeant expressed his dissatisfaction with the penalty. He believed that the punishment was excessive considering the nature of the violation. He also pointed out that more serious incidents occur during race weekends without receiving the same level of punishment. Sargeant mentioned cases where other drivers slowed down in front of him during qualifying, almost causing serious accidents, but faced no consequences.

According to Sargeant, receiving penalty points for a situation that was barely visible on camera is indicative of a problematic direction for Formula 1. He called for a reconsideration of the current penalty points system to ensure fairness and consistency in the sport.

Before Kevin Magnussen received an additional five penalty points in Miami, bringing his total to 10 and leaving him just two points away from a race ban, Sergio Perez was the championship leader in penalty points, with eight.

Perez believed that penalties imposed during the race itself should be punishment enough and questioned whether penalty points need to be given for each incident.

“I think the penalties themselves are already a consequence, and adding penalty points, especially with the increase in the number of races, is something that definitely should be reviewed,” he said.

“Every incident, if you look at the points each driver receives, many of them seem excessive, but the rule is in effect.

“However, I hope that in the future, this is something that can be reassessed.”

However, Perez’s argument may lose its credibility after observing Magnussen’s driving in Miami.

Despite accumulating 35 seconds in time penalties during the Miami Sprint, Magnussen continued to defend his position against the cars behind him, determined to follow his team’s instructions to protect Nico Hulkenberg ahead.

If it weren’t for the penalty points accompanying the time penalties, there would be little motivation for Haas and Magnussen to refrain from employing similar tactics in the future.

During the Miami Sprint, Magnussen received three penalty points and two more for causing a collision with Sargeant in the Miami GP.

Assigning penalty points to Magnussen for these incidents is fair, but it also supports Sargeant’s complaints.

Magnussen received two penalty points for ending Sargeant’s race by colliding with the barrier, while Sargeant received the same number of points for overtaking a competitor under the safety car, with the distance between him and Hulkenberg being almost imperceptible.

The lack of consistency in the number of penalty points assigned for each infraction is something that race stewards and the FIA must address to avoid further dissatisfaction among F1 drivers.
