FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has finally responded to the firestorm of criticism that erupted after Max Verstappen’s controversial penalty for swearing during the Singapore Grand Prix. The ban on drivers using foul language, coupled with Verstappen’s community service punishment, ignited a wave of online outrage aimed squarely at the FIA, prompting Ben Sulayem to break his silence and defend the decision.

The Backlash: A Swear Ban That Left F1 Fans Furious

The FIA’s decision to penalize Verstappen for his on-track language seemed to have hit a nerve. Fans, pundits, and even fellow drivers unleashed a torrent of criticism, labeling the penalty as petty and unnecessary. Verstappen himself, known for his outspoken nature, took multiple jabs at the ruling over the Singapore weekend, further fueling the uproar. To many, the swear ban symbolized an overreach by the governing body, stifling drivers’ ability to express their frustrations in the heat of the moment.

But the criticism didn’t stop there. The outrage wasn’t just about Verstappen’s penalty—it was a broader backlash against the FIA’s perceived micromanagement of driver behavior. Fans accused the governing body of losing touch with the raw emotion and intensity that makes Formula 1 so captivating.

Ben Sulayem Hits Back: ‘We’ll Only Get Rubbish’

In a bold rebuttal, Ben Sulayem struck back at the critics, making it clear that he expected the backlash but stood firm behind the FIA’s decisions. “We will never get the credit. Impossible. We’ll only get rubbish,” he declared, acknowledging the flood of negativity that often accompanies the FIA’s rule changes. According to the FIA President, no matter what the governing body does, they’ll never receive the praise they deserve.

Ben Sulayem also emphasized that the FIA plays a crucial role in the financial and operational success of Formula 1. Yet, despite the value they bring, the organization is consistently overshadowed and underappreciated. “Everybody made money out of the FIA, everyone except the FIA. Everyone gets the credit, except the FIA,” he remarked, highlighting what he sees as the governing body’s thankless role in the sport’s ecosystem.

A Divided F1: Is the FIA Losing Control?

This latest spat between the FIA and the F1 community has left the sport at a crossroads. As the governing body tightens its grip on driver conduct, the backlash from drivers and fans alike is growing louder. Many feel that the FIA’s increasing regulations are stifling the very essence of Formula 1, where emotions run high and drivers should be allowed to express themselves.

Max Verstappen’s community service penalty has become a symbol of the disconnect between the FIA and the sport’s key players. What was once a governing body focused on safety and fairness is now viewed by some as an overbearing force, micromanaging every aspect of the sport. Verstappen’s ongoing digs at the penalty only underscore the frustration brewing beneath the surface.

What’s Next for the FIA?

As the FIA faces this tidal wave of criticism, the question remains: will they soften their stance or continue enforcing controversial rules? Ben Sulayem has made it clear that he isn’t backing down, but the growing tension between the governing body and the drivers could lead to further clashes in the future.

In a sport driven by passion and intensity, balancing order and freedom of expression has always been a challenge. But with the FIA doubling down on its policies, the rift between the governing body and the F1 community is only widening.

The coming months will reveal whether the FIA can adapt to the demands of drivers and fans or if this latest controversy is just the beginning of a long battle for control over the future of Formula 1.
