Charles Leclerc and Lance Stroll had incredible luck in participating in the qualifying session of the Spanish Grand Prix without receiving penalties, despite their questionable behavior during the final practice.
Leclerc was visibly frustrated when Norris hindered him at Turn 5 towards the end of FP3. In response, Leclerc deliberately collided with the McLaren driver just before Turn 7. Norris reported damage to his car and expressed his frustration, stating that Leclerc intentionally hit him.
A similar incident occurred between Stroll and Lewis Hamilton just a few corners earlier, at Turn 5. Stroll collided with the Mercedes driver, causing concern for the safety of both drivers.
Both incidents were examined according to Article 33.4 of the sporting regulations, which prohibits driving in a manner considered potentially dangerous or erratic. This rule was also applied to Fernando Alonso for his involvement in the George Russell accident during the Australian GP.
The stewards determined that the actions of Leclerc and Stroll were erratic but not dangerous. As a result, both drivers received a reprimand based on previous cases. This was the first reprimand for both drivers in the 2024 season, allowing them to participate in the qualifying session without receiving penalties. It was truly a stroke of luck for both drivers.
The main difference between the stewards’ reports on the incidents was that Stroll admitted to deliberately expressing his dissatisfaction by stopping in front of the other driver. On the other hand, Leclerc attributed his actions to a misjudgment of his car’s position while trying to get out of the racing line before Turn 7.
It is difficult to believe Leclerc’s explanation that he was just maneuvering out of the racing line, especially considering his visible anger immediately after the incident. In contrast, Stroll’s intention was clear with his “erratic” maneuver.
Interestingly, the commissioners acknowledged that Leclerc’s maneuver was erratic but not dangerous, regardless of any possible intention. This suggests that evidence of intention would not have affected the punishment, which is a flawed approach.
There should be a distinction between an unforced error resulting from an erratic maneuver and a deliberate maneuver intended to make contact or intimidate another driver. Although intention is difficult to prove, the commissioners should make the best decision based on the available evidence. In Leclerc’s case, all signs point to a deliberate maneuver.
A deliberate maneuver of this kind should result in a significant penalty, such as a grid penalty or even the threat of disqualification in the standings. Using a car as a weapon to make a point, regardless of the speed involved, is reckless and endangers everyone on the track. The severity of the penalty given to Sebastian Vettel for deliberately touching Hamilton’s Mercedes during the 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix serves as an appropriate precedent.
Furthermore, the lack of punishment sets a concerning example for young drivers at all levels of motorsport. Minor maneuvers during low-speed training sessions should not be seen as an opportunity to seek justice on the track by touching another car. The rules should discourage this type of behavior.
It is important to note that neither Leclerc nor Stroll are inherently dangerous drivers. Leclerc has a clean record, with no penalty points, and is generally considered a fair driver. However, this moment of recklessness should not go without appropriate consequences.
A reprimand may be given for various minor infractions, but using a car to retaliate against another driver is not comparable to minor obstruction infractions. Such actions should be considered “dangerous” according to the rules.
If the current rules do not classify these actions as “dangerous”, then they are inadequate. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the stewards to ensure justice, not the drivers. Unfortunately, this was not the case in the Spanish GP, and the system needs to be reassessed.
