After a dominant performance in the first round of the Formula 2 season in Sakhir, the 20-year-old driver from Barbados led the F2 Driver Standings.

Currently positioned in third place in the Driver Standings, with only 11 points behind leader Paul Aron, Maloney is hopeful for a resurgence.
Maloney expressed, “My sole focus is to win more races and deliver the best performance possible for the rest of the year. I kind of disregarded the first few rounds in terms of results, and my main goal now is to secure those desired results.”
Making history in Bahrain as the first Barbadian driver to achieve victory in the feeder series, Maloney, a Sauber Academy driver, secured a reserve seat in the Andretti Formula E team for Season 10, as a result of his remarkable junior career.
Concluding the 2023 Formula 2 season in 10th place after securing a second place in Formula 3 the previous year, Maloney stated, “In my second year, I have gained great knowledge about the car. I approach this year with a different mindset, seeking to extract the maximum potential from the car in each round.”
He also added: “It is challenging when you reflect on the race weekend and realize that you did not perform to the best of your ability. The outcome is never determined by a single factor, but rather by a multitude of variables that influence favorable and unfavorable results. I am diligently working to improve in this aspect.”
In pursuit of his ultimate aspiration in Formula 1, Maloney faces a significant challenge this season as he tries to secure a position at the top of motorsport. In February of this year, he became a member of the Sauber Academy, taking on the role of Reserve Driver for Sauber Motorsport, which has caught the attention of prominent teams. Reflecting on his ambitions, Maloney expressed: “My dream is to compete in Formula 1. However, with only 20 spots available, proving to be a formidable task to secure a place, and timing plays a crucial role.”
Recognizing the privilege of being close to his dream in Formula 2, Maloney revealed that he never anticipated such a close connection during his younger years. Growing up in a family deeply involved in motorsport, especially his father, two uncles, and grandfather, who all participated in racing, undoubtedly influenced his aspirations. Reflecting on his upbringing, Maloney shared: “We are a family immersed in the world of motorsport. Conversations within our family rarely deviate from racing-related subjects. When pursuing Formula 1, maintaining unwavering focus becomes imperative. Any deviation from racing means potentially missing out on opportunities for improvement.”
Maloney also explained the dynamics within his family, emphasizing how his father’s expertise in strategy and data analysis calms his own nerves, while his mother, on the other hand, anxiously paces back and forth during races. Drawing on the knowledge and skills gained from his family, Maloney tirelessly strives to push his limits in pursuit of his ultimate goal. His track record serves as a testament to his talent and, perhaps even more impressively, his ability to quickly absorb new information.
In 2019, Maloney claimed the title of the British F4 Championship in his debut year after transitioning from karting. Following this achievement, he secured a respectable fourth place in FRECA, propelling him into the F3 series, where he achieved a second place finish in 2022. In the previous year, Maloney concluded the F2 season in 10th place. However, this year he has already secured two victories and positioned himself in contention for the championship title.
So far, his track record in single-seater racing has been impressive, and Maloney also got a taste of rally earlier this year.
“Barbados has a strong rally scene,” he explained. “I participated in a few rallies there, and it was an incredible experience. It’s a completely different challenge compared to circuit racing. Although I was winning stages, it wasn’t as smooth as I expected.
“In rally, you can’t afford to be 100% committed in every turn because of the inherent dangers. Anything can happen at any moment. There were moments when I feared for my safety, but I gave it my all.
“The crowd support in Barbados was exceptional. Racing at home was a truly amazing experience. However, my ultimate dream will always be to compete in Formula 1.”
After a disappointing weekend in Monaco that cost him the lead in the Championship, Maloney has a lot to consider before the next round in Barcelona.
He shared: “When it comes to racing, I need to have confidence in my plan. It’s not just about going on the track.
“I need to approach each race with a clear mindset, not get too involved in the qualifying sessions, and focus on doing the best job possible.”
Eager to reclaim his position at the top of the standings, the Rodin Motorsport driver is looking forward to a trouble-free weekend in Barcelona from June 21-23.
