Winner of the race Lando Norris (GBR) Celebrates McLaren Victory

Miami Grand Prix, Miami, Florida, USA – Lando Norris, the victorious driver of the McLaren MCL38, celebrates as he passes by his team at the end of the race on May 5, 2024. This thrilling event marks the sixth round of the Formula 1 World Championship.

High Expectations for a Competitive Season

During the off-season, there were talks of a more competitive field, with teams converging in performance. However, the first round in Bahrain saw a dominant victory from Red Bull, led by Max Verstappen. The Miami Grand Prix weekend offered a glimmer of hope, as Carlos Sainz and Ferrari, the same duo that ended Red Bull’s streak in 2023, defeated Verstappen once again. Despite a technical issue that hampered Verstappen’s charge in Melbourne, there were rumors that Sainz and Ferrari had the pace to win regardless. It was only in the third round that Red Bull faced their first defeat in 2024. In Japan, they were once again at the front, securing a comfortable victory. Verstappen continued his winning streak by claiming the Sprint and Grand Prix titles in Shanghai.

Lando Norris and McLaren Make a Surprising Impact

A surprise competitor emerged in China – Lando Norris, a McLaren driver. During the second half of the race, Norris kept up with Verstappen’s pace, finishing in a commendable second place. McLaren hinted at a significant upgrade package for the Miami Grand Prix, and Norris showcased the team’s progress. In Miami, Norris’s McLaren underwent ten revisions, while his teammate Oscar Piastri received a more modest update. The team’s pace was immediately evident, with Norris looking set to secure pole position in the Sprint Qualifying. However, his speed decreased in SQ3, and he started the Sprint in ninth place. Unfortunately, his race ended abruptly at the first corner of the first lap due to an incident for which he was not at fault.

However, the situation changed during the main grand prix. Norris secured a fifth-place qualifying, trailing Verstappen’s pole time by three and a half tenths. This demonstrated the intense competition at the front of the pack during a single lap, which had intensified since the start of the season. Leclerc, from Ferrari, qualified in second place, just over a tenth behind Verstappen’s impressive time. Sainz, in third place, was a little over two tenths behind.

Despite leading the race in its early stages, Verstappen faced challenges for the win. His encounter with the famous Miami bollard off the track revealed his vulnerability when facing less than perfect conditions behind the wheel of his RB20, especially as Red Bull competitors closed in on his pace. The peculiar nature of the Miami circuit, along with the Sprint weekend, made it difficult for the Dutchman to find the ideal balance for his car.

Then, luck intervened.

An opportune intervention from the Safety Car allowed Norris to make a pit stop and maintain his position at the front. If the Safety Car had appeared one or two laps earlier, we could be discussing a victory for Sainz or even for Oscar Piastri, as there were several contenders in the mix in Miami. However, it was Norris who seized the opportunity and proved he could handle the pressure. He managed to fend off Verstappen’s advances during the restart and extended his lead. In the final stretch, Verstappen couldn’t keep up with Norris’ pace. The McLaren was undoubtedly the fastest car on the track. Last season, the Woking team established itself as the best of the rest and showed signs of challenging Red Bull in 2024. In Miami, we witnessed their progress coming to fruition as Norris claimed a well-deserved victory at the pinnacle of motorsport.

Indeed, the Safety Car played a role in Norris’ success, but it takes more than luck to capitalize on these opportunities. As his close friend Carlos Sainz aptly put it, “luck favors those who deserve it.” Or in Verstappen’s own words, “if my mother had testicles, she would be my father.” Quite a statement.

Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur shared his thoughts after the race, stating that Red Bull remains in the lead and that Max could have won without the incident involving the Safety Car. Vasseur also acknowledged that Red Bull has a slight advantage and that, compared to last year, Ferrari has made progress and is putting pressure on their rivals. This shift in dynamics has forced Red Bull to be more aggressive with their strategies, as they are no longer in the comfortable position they enjoyed last year. Vasseur believes this trend will continue throughout the season, with Ferrari and McLaren closing in on Red Bull.

Although Red Bull is still the fastest team and the favorite to win every Grand Prix, the competition is now close enough to challenge the reigning champions. Ferrari and McLaren have shown they can defeat Red Bull, and Ferrari will introduce a significant upgrade package at Imola. Furthermore, the performances of Mercedes and Aston Martin in the coming months remain uncertain. This high level of competition has reignited excitement for Formula 1.
