After being banned from Formula 1, Briatore, the mastermind behind one of the most significant scandals in the history of the sport, the crashgate incident during the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, made a comeback with Alpine as if nothing had happened. However, this is not entirely surprising considering that his accomplice Pat Symonds has been leading the technical side of the sport for quite some time.
Briatore spoke to Canal+ after his appointment and discussed the circumstances that led to his return with Alpine. He stated, “This is not a recent development; we have been discussing it for several months. I have a strong connection with Luca [de Meo] and truly believe that he is a brilliant mind. The only area where they lack something is Formula 1, and I consider myself a genius in Formula 1! We got together.”
Explaining his role, Briatore said, “I spring into action when needed. My job description is simple. I report to the President and together we make decisions. It is a crucial role as I work directly with the President of the Renault group and collaborate with everyone at Alpine, including Bruno [Famin], the new technical director. I handle a wide range of responsibilities,” clarified the Italian.
When asked about his qualifications for the position after being inactive for over 15 years, Briatore responded, “I believe you are less active than me! I have remained involved in Formula 1; I am a sport ambassador and attend all the races. What I bring to the table is a winning culture, the ‘racing spirit.’ That is what allowed me to succeed with Renault and Benetton. It always comes down to the people who make up the team. The technology may have changed, but the team’s success still depends on the individuals. Together, we must be convinced that in two years, Alpine can be among the top 4 teams,” emphasized.
When asked about the weaknesses that need to be addressed, the new Alpine consultant refused to identify specific problems, emphasizing the need for overall improvement in team performance. “We must become a competitive team,” he said. “I prefer not to discuss the engine or other specific aspects. The mandate I have from the president is to build a high-performance team. After that, we will determine what is best for the team and for Renault. However, at the moment, this is not a primary goal.”
The Alpine driver lineup for the 2025 Formula 1 season has not yet been confirmed. They announced that Esteban Ocon will leave at the end of 2024, while Pierre Gasly’s contract also expires at the end of this season, although it is expected that he will continue. When asked about the team’s driver decision for 2025, Briatore responded: “That is not a current concern. The priority is to have a high-performance car and then the driver will follow. Currently, I believe Gasly can do well. Maybe we will pair him with a young or experienced driver. However, it is not our main focus. Now, our priority is to have a competitive car and I hope that next year we will be on the path to success,” Briatore concluded.
