BMW has called back over 70,800 electric vehicles in the U.S. from the models i4, i5, i7, and iX. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected models may be impacted by a software issue that could result in a sudden loss of power while driving.
The issue can shut down the electric motors, increasing the risk of accidents, and is typically indicated by a red warning on the dashboard, usually occurring about 15 to 20 seconds before the power loss happens.
The announced recall covers models capable of performing “over-the-air” remote updates, which will allow the German brand to carry out a free software update for all owners of the affected models.
This update can be performed in two ways: through a remote update sent directly to the vehicle or in person at an authorized dealership.
BMW has reported that, to date, there are no records of accidents or injuries related to the indicated software problem.
