Automobile production rises by 8.3% in August.

The Automobile Association of Portugal (ACAP) revealed that automotive production in the country grew by 8.3% in August compared to the same period in 2023, with 12,574 vehicles produced in Portugal.

In a statement, ACAP added that cumulatively, between January and August 2024, 209,804 vehicles left the factories located in Portugal, which is a decrease of 5.3% compared to the same period last year.

“The statistical information for the first eight months of 2024 confirms the importance of exports to the automotive sector, as 97.9% of vehicles manufactured in Portugal are destined for the external market, which positively contributes to the balance of the Portuguese trade.”, the ACAP statement adds.

Europe continues to be the leading market for exports of vehicles manufactured in the country, accounting for 85.1% of the total, with Germany (23.3%), Italy (13.4%), France (11.2%), and Spain (9.2%) at the top of the ranking.

In terms of major regions, the African market, led by Algeria (5.4%), maintains second place in exports of cars manufactured in Portugal, accounting for 8.1% of the exports. Asia ranks third with 3.3% of the exports.

Regarding vehicle assembly in Portugal, 32 heavy vehicles were assembled in July, representing a 23.1% increase compared to the same month in 2023.

In terms of major regions, the African market, led by Algeria (5.1%), maintains second place in exports of cars manufactured in Portugal with 7.9 percent of the exports. Asia is in third place with 3.4 percent of the exports of motor vehicles manufactured in Portugal.

Regarding the assembly of motor vehicles in the national territory, in August 2024, 14 heavy vehicles were assembled, representing an increase of 55.6% compared to the same month in 2023.

In cumulative terms, in the first eight months of 2024, the assembly of heavy vehicles showed a growth of 74.6% compared to the same period last year, representing 199 vehicles assembled.

From January to August, 95% of the vehicles assembled in Portugal were exported, representing 189 units. Germany (56.1%) and the United Kingdom (43.9%) are the only destinations for these exports.
