Alpine, the team based in Enstone, is determined to let their performance on the track speak for itself amid a challenging start to the 2024 Formula 1 season. After finishing sixth in the Constructors’ Championship last year, the team decided to overhaul the design of their car for this season. Despite a slow start in Bahrain, with Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly qualifying at the back of the grid, former technical director Matt Harman acknowledged that the car’s performance is in line with expectations. The team is focused on improving traction and rear downforce, and plans to introduce upgrades soon. Alpine is taking inspiration from McLaren’s turnaround last year and remains optimistic about their prospects, but emphasizes the need for humility and patience. The team is confident that their hard work will pay off and is eager to prove themselves on the track.

In terms of the biggest constraint with the A524, Harman acknowledged that traction is a significant area where Alpine is falling behind their competitors in terms of performance.

“I believe traction is always a challenging aspect for these cars, and we must proceed with caution, especially considering the sensitivity to traction here in Bahrain,” he said.

“However, it is an area we are determined to focus on and actively addressing. We have some promising developments in the works to address this issue.”

Meanwhile, Alpine team principal Bruno Famin revealed that the car exceeds the minimum weight requirement, dispelling rumors of a possible 10-kilogram excess.

Although Harman could not specify when Alpine would address the weight excess contributing to their performance deficit, he expressed confidence that it would be corrected in the near future.

“I cannot provide a specific timeframe, but we are working tirelessly to resolve this issue. We are fully aware of where the weight is located and how to remove it,” he assured.

“We have also made informed decisions based on the winter tests we conducted, which allowed us to eliminate certain components of the car that would have remained previously. We are making the most of the situation. I admit we are not where we expected to be. However, I have full confidence that we will reach the weight limit very soon.”

Harman also dismissed the idea that unsuccessful crash tests during the winter should be a cause for concern regarding the team’s struggle to reach the desired weight.

It was not several crash tests, but rather one in particular,” he clarified in response to the role of crash tests in Alpine’s ongoing challenges. “To some extent, this contributed to our current situation.”

“However, we must not forget that we must continue to strive and make the most effort. Avoiding failures is a simple task, and we could easily do that. However, I must commend the people in Enstone for their exceptional response and resilience in the face of adversity.”

“We conducted our filming day and track tests, both of which demonstrated excellent reliability. Now, our main focus is on resolving the weight issue.”
