Alpine has unveiled that an on-track scuffle between drivers Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly nearly sparked friction within the team just before their remarkable double podium at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The team, which used the chaotic wet conditions to secure a massive 33-point boost and leap to sixth in the Constructors’ standings, had to address a minor clash that occurred during the intense qualifying session.
Ocon qualified in fourth place, while Gasly, caught out by an untimely stoppage, had to start from 12th. However, tensions flared when Ocon overtook Gasly at the pit exit during Q2’s rush to beat the clock, leaving Gasly feeling slighted. Alpine’s team principal, Oliver Oakes, quickly stepped in to clear the air, ensuring no lingering resentment as they prepared for the race. “There was a little bit of needle after Q2,” Oakes admitted. “I told them: ‘Everyone has to fight for themselves,’ but we still needed to have a chat. You can’t hide from doing that.”
This minor spat comes against a backdrop of a complicated relationship between Gasly and Ocon, who were childhood friends until an on-track clash strained their connection. Despite this history, Oakes credited both drivers for their commitment and professionalism in securing Alpine’s first double podium since 2013.
“The role of the drivers was huge,” Oakes remarked. “Even in tough conditions, keeping it on track and making the right calls, they both nailed it. I know they’ve had their history, but they’re committed, they work hard, and they’re an essential part of what we achieved today.”
This impressive showing highlights the growing strength of Alpine’s driver lineup, with Ocon and Gasly putting their past aside to deliver under challenging conditions and propel Alpine to new heights in the 2024 season.
