Aston Martin is struggling in Barcelona

Fernando Alonso acknowledges that Aston Martin is prepared to face some challenging races in the coming weeks, as he secured 11th place in the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix.

Aston Martin’s decline since the middle of the previous season has continued in this campaign, with Alonso warning in Monaco that the team was returning to the midfield.

Despite scoring double points in Canada two weeks ago, the Silverstone-based team faced difficulties in Barcelona, resulting in the elimination of both cars in Q2.

Alonso recorded a lap time over two tenths faster than his teammate Lance Stroll, but it was not enough to secure a spot in Q3, as he was 0.019s away.

However, the Spaniard was not disappointed to lose the battle for pole position in his own country. He revealed that Aston Martin was already expecting even greater challenges.

“Yes, very close. We knew it would be highly competitive on this type of circuit,” he admitted.

“Austria will be even more challenging, as if you are running in 1:04, it will be even tighter. So overall, I am satisfied with the result, even if it’s hard to tell in front of the home crowd.

“But before qualifying, our predictions were more pessimistic. Even with one car, we chose to use three sets in Q1, which indicates a lack of confidence.

“Overall, starting in P10 with Sergio Perez’s penalty is a good result and hopefully, tomorrow we will be just one position away from scoring points. We’ll see.”

Alpine emerged as a surprising competitor, with both cars reaching the top 10. However, Alonso stated that he was not surprised by his former team’s strong performance.

When asked if he was worried about Alpine surpassing Aston Martin, despite only having five points this season, Alonso replied: “No, I think we were aware.

“Alpine was ahead of us in Monaco and they were very close in Canada. Here, they are just half a tenth ahead, so they are improving while we are probably getting worse!”

Alonso revealed that Aston Martin is working on new advancements that he hopes will be a turning point for the team to overcome their current slump.

“The combination of these factors is not ideal, but I have mentioned before that we have some initiatives underway that should lead us back in the right direction,” he said.

“We anticipate a challenging period ahead, both in terms of the upcoming races in Austria and Silverstone. However, we must continue to accumulate points, even if it means finishing eighth or ninth.

“We must not give up and maintain a positive outlook during these difficult times.”

When asked about the deadline for the end of this challenging period, Alonso explained that Aston Martin has now identified the reasons behind their significant decline.

“We hope to see improvements before the summer break. However, the team has gained a comprehensive understanding of what went right and what went wrong,” he replied.

“This analysis covers not only this year, but also the latter part of last year. Like other teams, we are pushing the limits of development to the extreme.

“As a result, the cars have become more demanding to drive. However, we have grasped some concepts that will improve our performance.

“But, as I mentioned before, it will take a few more races for the team to fully implement these ideas.”
