The wait is almost over. Hyundai’s highly-anticipated 2025-spec i20 N Rally1 will make its competitive debut at the second round of the World Rally Championship (WRC) in Sweden, ushering in a new chapter for the Alzenau-based squad. While the iconic Monte Carlo Rally will see Hyundai field last year’s car, the spotlight is firmly on the upgraded machine set to hit the stages from February 13-16.

From Delays to a Bold Debut

Initially slated to introduce an almost completely redesigned car for 2025, Hyundai’s plans were derailed by uncertainty over WRC’s evolving regulations at the start of 2024. However, a strategic agreement to fast-track 2026 development allowances—known as “jokers”—enabled the team to salvage key updates. The result? A heavily evolved i20 N Rally1 that promises to blend speed with driveability.

What’s New in the 2025 i20 N Rally1?

Details about the upgrades remain closely guarded, but testing glimpses and insider reports suggest significant changes in several areas:

  • Suspension Overhaul: The most noticeable alteration appears to be the suspension, with angled dampers replaced by a more vertical setup. This change is expected to enhance handling precision and adaptability across diverse surfaces.
  • Transmission Tweaks: Improvements in the car’s transmission are rumored, potentially optimizing power delivery and reliability.
  • Overall Package: According to world champion Thierry Neuville, the changes aim to make the car not only faster but also more comfortable to drive—an invaluable edge in the WRC’s grueling conditions.

When pressed for details, Neuville remained tight-lipped but hinted at promising results during limited testing. “I’m looking forward to the new car,” he said with a smile. “Testing has been very limited but has been promising.” On whether the car will be faster or easier to handle, he added: “A bit of both.”

Hyundai’s 2025 Objectives: A Championship Push

The introduction of the 2025-spec i20 N Rally1 is part of Hyundai’s bid to dethrone Toyota as the dominant force in the WRC. After a challenging 2024 season marked by Toyota’s relentless pace, Hyundai is banking on this evolved platform to close the gap.

Thierry Neuville, who enters the season as the defending world champion, is optimistic about the team’s direction. His experience and input have been pivotal in shaping the development of the new car, making Sweden’s snow and ice a critical proving ground for Hyundai’s revamped contender.

What to Expect in Sweden

With the 2025-spec i20 N Rally1’s competitive debut set for the Umeå-based event, all eyes will be on Hyundai to deliver a strong performance. The icy conditions of Sweden will put the car’s suspension upgrades and handling improvements to the test, offering a glimpse of its potential for the rest of the season.

The Bigger Picture: WRC’s Future

Hyundai’s decision to leverage development allowances underscores the ongoing evolution of the WRC’s technical landscape. As manufacturers navigate regulatory changes and push the boundaries of hybrid rally technology, the debut of the 2025 i20 N Rally1 signals Hyundai’s intent to remain at the forefront of the sport.
