McLaren Roars Back Into Endurance Racing with the Stunning MCL-HY Hypercar!
In a bold and electrifying announcement that has sent shockwaves through the motorsport world, McLaren has unveiled its latest marvel, the MCL-HY FIA Hypercar. This stunning machine is set to lead the British automotive powerhouse back to the prestigious World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2027. After nearly three decades of absence from endurance racing's elite, McLaren's return marks a thrilling new chapter in its illustrious history.
The MCL-HY, showcased in a captivating 2026 test livery that pays homage to the iconic McLaren M6A, which ruled the Can-Am series in the late 1960s, symbolizes the team's fierce ambition to conquer motorsport's ultimate Triple Crown. This coveted accolade encompasses victories at the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans—a feat no other constructor has achieved.
The McLaren Hypercar Team, formed in collaboration with United Autosports, will field two prototypes of the MCL-HY, with testing scheduled to kick off in May 2026. The highly skilled driver lineup includes the talented Mikkel Jensen, joined by promising talents from the McLaren Driver Development Programme—Gregoire Saucy and Richard Verschoor. They will also be supported by experienced United Autosports driver Ben Hanley, whose invaluable insight will be crucial to the project’s success.

“Years and months in the making and here we are, revealing the MCL-HY to the world,” declared McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown. “McLaren Racing now has three race cars ready to contest the biggest motorsport series in the world: Formula 1, INDYCAR, and WEC. This means McLaren, its partners, and fans can challenge for the Triple Crown of Monaco GP, Indy500, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans together, a unique cross-series story that sets us apart.”
McLaren's storied heritage in endurance racing is underscored by its unforgettable debut victory at Le Mans in 1995, achieved by the formidable duo of Yannick Dalmas and Masanori Sekiya. The team's return to this elite arena comes on the heels of the FIA's extension of Hypercar regulations through at least 2029, instilling confidence among manufacturers and paving the way for exciting new developments, as seen with recent announcements from Ford and Genesis.

James Barclay, executive director of McLaren Endurance Racing and team principal of the McLaren Hypercar Team, emphasized the significance of this moment: “The reveal of the MCL-HY sets the scene for the next chapter of McLaren's return to the top level of sports car racing: from the test livery that reflects and respects our 1960s Can-Am roots; to our new hybrid-powered Hypercar that has been designed and is being developed by our world-class team to take on this exciting and highly competitive era of sports car racing…”
As McLaren gears up for this thrilling resurgence, motorsport enthusiasts worldwide are left eagerly anticipating the return of a true giant of racing. Will the MCL-HY be the vehicle that propels McLaren back to its rightful place among the legends of endurance racing? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain: the stage is set for an exhilarating showdown at Le Mans!
