The VW Group is determined to start production of solid-state batteries in 2025, and it has announced promising results in tests with the new battery technology for electric vehicles.

According to “Automotive News Europe”, the tests carried out with a prototype developed by QuantumScape, an American company partnered with VW, exceeded the industry benchmark values in recently conducted tests.

During the tests of VW’s PowerCo battery unit, the cell recorded a 5% storage loss after more than 1000 charging cycles, which the brand states is equivalent to about half a million kilometers of driving.

The German automaker also noted that the industry targets for this development phase are 700 charging cycles and a maximum capacity loss of 20%.

“These results are very encouraging,” emphasized Frank Blome, director of PowerCo. “The result of this development could be a battery cell that allows for long distances with a single charge and can be quickly charged without deteriorating.”

It is worth noting that the Volkswagen Group sees battery technology as a central element in its New Auto strategy and created PowerCo, an independent battery company, in 2022.
