When it arrived on the market in 2021, the Mercedes-Benz EQS was not just the first fully electric luxury sedan from the Stuttgart brand. Above all, it was a statement of intent. With an approach focused on efficiency, technological innovation, and a futuristic interpretation of luxury, the model established itself from the outset as a true laboratory for mass production. It was the car that redefined aerodynamic benchmarks among production models, introduced the MBUX Hyperscreen as a new symbol of the Mercedes-Benz digital experience, and came to represent, in the electric universe, the brand’s historical ambition to lead the transformation of the automobile.

Now, at a particularly important stage of its evolution, the EQS presents itself as profoundly renewed. More than a quarter of its components have been newly developed, updated, or refined, in a revision that goes far beyond a simple product update. At the heart of this transformation is a next-generation electric architecture, the integration of the new operating system MB.OS, substantial improvements in range, charging, dynamics, driving assistance, and comfort, as well as a new aesthetic and sensory interpretation of luxury according to Mercedes-Benz.

The result is a model that not only seeks to keep pace with the evolution of the sector. It seeks to anticipate it.

A new EQS with next-generation electric architecture

The major technical foundation of this new phase of the EQS is an entirely renewed electric architecture. Mercedes-Benz introduces here 800-volt technology, new internally developed powertrains, a two-speed transmission on the rear axle, and higher-capacity batteries with optimized cell chemistry.

This combination allows for visible gains on various fronts. Efficiency improves, range increases, acceleration in intermediate regimes becomes stronger, and the travel experience comes even closer to what is expected from a luxury sedan designed for long distances. The new generation of the EQS makes it clear that electrification, for Mercedes-Benz, does not mean compromise or limitation. It means an expansion of capabilities.

One of the most significant numbers in this evolution belongs to the new EQS 450+, which now offers a WLTP range of up to 926 kilometers, a 13% increase compared to its predecessor. This is a figure that places the model among the absolute references of long-distance electric mobility. According to the data provided by the brand, this range allows for routes such as Munich-Paris or Zurich-Hamburg without the need for intermediate charging, which reinforces the positioning of the EQS as a sedan designed not only for the city or short trips but for full, sophisticated, and carefree use.

Faster and Smarter Charging

Mercedes-Benz has not only increased the range. It has also worked on the time needed to recover it. In the EQS 450+, EQS 500 4MATIC, and EQS 580 4MATIC models, the new 800-volt technology allows for charging powers of up to 350 kW. In just 10 minutes, it is possible to recover up to 320 kilometers of WLTP range.

Even at 400 volts, the system maintains high efficiency. In this scenario, the battery is virtually divided into two parts, allowing each half to charge at 400 volts and up to 175 kW. This solution ensures speed and effectiveness even when the available infrastructure does not operate at the maximum level of the new architecture.

The batteries are also evolving in their internal composition. With the same external dimensions, they now offer 122 kWh instead of 118 kWh, thanks to optimized cell chemistry, with anodes that combine silicon oxide with graphite. This solution increases energy density by weight and volume, allowing more energy to be stored in the same space. At the same time, Mercedes-Benz emphasizes that the cobalt content has been further reduced.

More Effective Energy Recovery and New Two-Speed Transmission

Another determining element in the evolution of the new EQS is the substantial increase in energy recovery capacity during deceleration. The recovery power rises to 385 kW, a value about one third higher than before. In practice, this allows for a significant portion of deceleration to be carried out intelligently through regeneration during everyday use, increasing the overall efficiency of the vehicle and returning more energy to the battery during braking.

The dynamics of the model also benefit from the introduction of a two-speed transmission on the rear axle. The first gear favors quick starts and lively acceleration from low speeds. The second, longer gear is designed to ensure efficiency, comfort, and power delivery at high speeds, especially on highways and long intercity connections. The maximum speed is reached in this second gear, demonstrating its focus on sustained performance and refinement.

More than a Car: An Energy Storage Unit

One of the most significant innovations of the new EQS is the ability of its battery to function as a flexible energy source in daily life. The model now supports vehicle-to-grid and vehicle-to-home functions, allowing it to directly power the public grid or a home.

This opens new usage scenarios, transforming the automobile into an extension of the domestic or urban energy ecosystem. This is an approach that expands the role of the electric vehicle and shows how Mercedes-Benz envisions the car of the future: not just as a means of transportation, but as an active component of an intelligent energy infrastructure.

Aerodynamics continues to be a hallmark of excellence

Even with all the technical evolution, the EQS maintains one of its great banners: aerodynamic efficiency. With a drag coefficient of just 0.20, it remains among the most aerodynamic cars ever produced.

In the new model, engineers optimized, among other elements, the exterior mirrors to further improve airflow. The frontal area is 2.51 m², resulting in an effective drag area of 0.5 m². Mercedes-Benz illustrates this value by comparing it to the air resistance of cyclists, emphasizing the level of aerodynamic sophistication achieved.

Aerodynamics is not only important for range. It also contributes to onboard silence and the serenity of operation at high speeds, two fundamental pillars in a car of this segment.

Steer-by-wire: a profound change in the relationship between driver and machine

One of the most striking innovations of this new generation of the EQS is the introduction of steer-by-wire, a technology with which Mercedes-Benz becomes the first German car manufacturer to offer it in a mass-produced model.

This represents a structural change in the way the driver interacts with the car. The system creates a new steering feel, more precise, more direct, and more sophisticated, while reducing the effort required for maneuvers and parking. It also eliminates the need to reposition the hands on the steering wheel in many situations, making usage more natural.

Another important advantage is the elimination of unwanted vibrations from degraded surfaces, which were previously transmitted to the driver through the steering wheel. Steer-by-wire preserves the precision and intuitiveness of steering but adds refinement and isolation.

The interior architecture itself benefits from this technology. A flatter steering wheel visually opens up the space, improves the view of the driver’s display, and facilitates entry and exit from the vehicle.

The system operates in conjunction with the rear axle steering, with an angle of up to 10 degrees. At high speeds, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front wheels, enhancing stability and confidence. In line with the brand’s safety standards, Mercedes-Benz also implements a redundant architecture, with dual signal paths, high-precision sensors, and powerful control units. Even in an extreme scenario of total failure, lateral control can be maintained through rear steering and selective braking interventions via ESP.

Next-generation driving assistance based on sensors, AI, and MB.OS

The new EQS comes equipped with a particularly advanced set of assistance technology. The vehicle integrates 10 external cameras, up to five radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors, all coordinated by a high-performance control unit operating on MB.OS.

Artificial intelligence processes the collected data and interprets the surrounding environment based on large volumes of information from the fleet. The goal is to enhance driver support without compromising naturalness and safety.

Among the available functions are systems such as DISTRONIC, steering assistance, lane change assistance, evasive maneuver function to avoid obstacles within the same lane, proactive lane change, and various highway support solutions.

In the parking aspect, the MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST has been significantly improved. The system detects parking spaces on both sides of the vehicle, also recognizes spaces not marked by lines, and for the first time, allows diagonal parking. Additionally, it can park automatically at speeds of up to 5 km/h, about 60% faster than before.

There is also an automatic reverse function for part of the recently completed route, particularly useful in tight areas where it is not easy to reverse.

Intelligent suspension and superior comfort on uneven surfaces

The comfort experience in the new EQS has also been enhanced through the new generation of the AIRMATIC system, now with intelligent damping control based on information from the cloud.

When this function is active, the suspension electronically adjusts its response just before the vehicle goes over long and artificial bumps. Information is shared between Mercedes-Benz vehicles through Car-to-X technology, allowing the car to “know” in advance what to expect based on data transmitted by other vehicles.

This solution especially improves comfort in the rear seats, where the smoothness of passing over irregularities becomes even more evident.

MB.OS transforms the EQS into the smartest Mercedes-Benz ever

The technological transition of the EQS reaches a new level with the integration of the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). This operating system centralizes and controls all aspects of the vehicle, transforming the model into a much more advanced digital companion.

MB.OS utilizes artificial intelligence, high-performance chips, and constant connectivity to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud, allowing for remote software updates and continuous evolution of the car over time. The EQS thus remains permanently updated and adaptable, with increasing access to digital extras through the Mercedes-Benz store and the brand’s app.

MBUX Virtual Assistant and an increasingly human digital experience

The new generation of MBUX integrates AI developed with contributions, among others, from Microsoft. The MBUX Virtual Assistant becomes a more natural, more contextual companion capable of conducting complex multi-step dialogues.

As an active avatar on the central screen, the assistant communicates with the user through animations that indicate when it is listening, speaking, or processing information. Mercedes-Benz offers different visual representations of this intelligence, including a star, a humanoid figure formed from clouds of stars, and the character “LittleBenz,” with a more emotional and playful approach.

Hyperscreen, Zero Layer, and a premium digital ecosystem experience

The EQS continues to offer the impressive MBUX Hyperscreen, now as standard. The concept brings together three display zones under a single continuous glass surface measuring over 55 inches, integrating the driver’s display, the central display, and the passenger display.

The experience becomes even more intuitive thanks to the MBUX Zero Layer, which presents the most relevant information and recommendations in a customizable bottom bar. The user can also freely organize applications and group them into folders with custom names, creating an experience very similar to the logic of using a smartphone.

Currently, more than 40 applications are available, covering music, audiobooks, video, games, and other digital services.

Intelligent Navigation, Three-Dimensional Visualization, and Google Integration

The digital driving experience is enhanced with the MBUX Surround Navigation, which uses data from cameras and sensors to present a real-time, three-dimensional view of the environment around the vehicle on the driver’s display. Other vehicles, pedestrians, bicycles, and motorcycles are visually represented, helping the driver understand not only what the car sees but also how the assistance systems are intervening.

Navigation is also based on Google Maps technology, combining real-time traffic data with the Mercedes-Benz interface and services.

The Navigation with Electric Intelligence system calculates routes taking into account not only kilometers but also energy, context, and situation. It automatically plans charging stops, adjusts settings to optimize fast charging, preconditions the battery when necessary, and in the future, will more accurately consider wind conditions along the route.

Sensory luxury: warmth, silence, air quality, and interior atmosphere

Inside, the new EQS deepens Mercedes-Benz’s philosophy of creating an environment that immediately conveys a sense of welcome. The brand calls it “Welcome home,” and this idea is now expressed in an even more refined way.

Among the innovations is the heating of the front seat belts, capable of reaching up to 44 ºC in cold weather. In addition to providing almost immediate comfort, this solution encourages occupants to remove bulky jackets before fastening their seat belts, improving the effectiveness of the system in the event of an accident.

The interior ambiance can be enhanced with new open-pore anthracite poplar wood, Nappa leather, and decorative stitching in a laurel pattern, which discreetly evoke the Mercedes-Benz emblem. For the first time, the EQS can also be configured with a leather-free interior.

The air quality on board is ensured by a high-efficiency HEPA filter, capable of retaining more than 99.65% of particles. The system also uses activated carbon to reduce odors, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides.

Rear spaces designed for working, relaxing, and traveling in first class

The cab-forward design of the EQS allows for a particularly generous cabin, especially in the rear. Mercedes-Benz has reinforced this argument with enhancements to the work and entertainment experience.

Two rear screens of 13.1 inches, new configurable MBUX remote controls, HD cameras for video conferencing with Microsoft Teams, Zoom, or Webex, and the Burmester High-End 3D Surround sound system with 15 speakers and Dolby Atmos elevate the experience to an almost executive level.

The rear comfort package includes electric seats, luxury headrests, armrests, wireless charging, side airbags, and seat heating.

A new aesthetic expression with more presence and status

Visually, the new EQS deepens its identity. It continues to present a fluid and efficient silhouette, but now adopts a more assertive, more prestigious, and also more sporty stance.

In the Electric Art version, the highlight is the illuminated Mercedes-Benz star on the hood and the black grille with wide chrome blades and backlit star pattern. In the AMG Line, the interpretation is more dynamic, with a specific grille, illuminated central star, and more aggressive-inspired bumpers.

The hood with power domes, the new front light signature with star-shaped emblems in the daytime running lights, the rear light strip enriched with new helical elements, and the new rear bumper enhance the model’s presence.

DIGITAL LIGHT more powerful, more efficient, and more advanced

The new EQS now includes as standard the new generation of DIGITAL LIGHT with micro-LED technology. The high-resolution lighting area increases by about 40%, while the energy consumption of the module can reduce by up to 50%.

The system offers a maximum ULTRA RANGE beam of up to 600 meters, equivalent to about six football fields, and improves the detection of poorly lit road users without dazzling others. The cornering light is now even more precise, thanks to the combination of camera information with map data.

Customization elevated to the level of automotive haute couture

For customers seeking a truly exclusive EQS, Mercedes-Benz enhances the MANUFAKTUR offering. New colors are available, such as black with glass particles and matte silver-green, as well as a wide variety of finishes, steering wheels, illuminated door sills, and emblem packages.

With the MANUFAKTUR Made to Measure program, the customer can choose from about 125 paint colors and customize the vehicle in great depth. In more complex cases, requests can even be evaluated individually by the brand’s specialists, with immersive visualization of the final result.

The EQS as a synthesis of heritage and future

The new Mercedes-Benz EQS is not just an update. It is a reaffirmation. The brand takes its first major electric sedan and transforms it into an even more convincing synthesis of efficiency, intelligence, comfort, luxury, and innovation.

At a time when the automotive industry seeks to balance energy transition, technological sophistication, and emotional identity, the EQS presents itself as a proposal that rejects simplifications. It remains a cutting-edge automobile, but now more complete, more mature, and more ambitious.

By introducing a new electric architecture, steer-by-wire steering, MB.OS, greater autonomy, ultra-fast charging, new comfort solutions, and an unparalleled digital experience, Mercedes-Benz reinforces with this model an old but still central idea in its history: that innovation and desire must always go hand in hand.

If in 2021 the EQS paved the way, now it redefines it.
