Radares de Lisboa rendem cerca de €10 milhões em dois anos

The National Authority for Road Safety (ANSR) announced that the National Speed Control System (SINCRO) will have 25 new radars starting in July, in addition to the existing 98.

In a statement, ANSR explains that out of the 25 new Speed Control Locations (LCV), 14 are for instant speed and 11 are for average speed.

ANSR also revealed the locations where the new radars will be installed, including IC2 (Oliveira de Azeméis, Aveiro district), A29 (Santa Maria da Feira, Aveiro, and Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto), IC1 (Santana da Serra, Ourique municipality, Beja district), IP3 (Coimbra), EN18 (Évora), EN 125 (Albufeira, Faro), EN 6-7 (Carcavelos and Parede, Cascais), IC17 (Loures), A43 (Campanhã, Porto), and IC1 (Poceirão and Marateca, Palmela-Alcácer do Sal).

ANSR emphasizes that the selected locations for the installation of the new radars were chosen based on two fundamental criteria: serious accidents and speed, particularly where speeding was relevant to these accidents. In these locations, 115 people have lost their lives in the past five years, an average of 23 fatalities per year.

Regarding the 37 radars that started operating in September 2023, there were three fatalities, a substantially lower number compared to the average of the past five years. No fatalities were recorded at any other locations.

In the total of the SINCRO system with 8 years of operation, “a significant reduction in accidents has been observed in places where radars have been implemented: 36% fewer accidents with victims, 74% fewer fatalities, 44% fewer serious injuries, and 36% fewer minor injuries,” the statement adds.

The ANSR also points out that in places where the new radars were installed, “there was a very significant average reduction in the number of vehicles exceeding the speed limit, about 90%, with the greatest reductions being observed in the sections covered by the radars located on EN101 in Guimarães, EN206 in Fafe, IC2 in Coimbra, IP7 (North-South Axis) in Lisbon, and IC17 (CRIL) in Odivelas,” according to measurements taken before their installation.
