Cameron leads first practice session of IMSA at Watkins Glen.

Dane Cameron, driving the Porsche Penske #7 963, emerged as the fastest driver in the early practice session for the 2024 Six Hours of the Glen in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. As the current championship leader, Cameron, along with his teammate Felipe Nasr, started their weekend positively at Watkins Glen International, with dry, hot, and windy track conditions. Cameron, a three-time IMSA SportsCar champion, set the fastest lap time of 1:34.175 early in the session, completing a total of 31 laps alongside Nasr.

Tom Blomqvist of Whelen Cadillac Racing, with the #31 V-Series.R, finished in second place with a time of 1:34.347, which was set later in the session after completing 35 laps. The #10 WTRAndretti Acura ARX-06, winner of the Detroit Grand Prix, secured third place in the GTP category, with Felipe Albuquerque recording a time of 1:34.452. The BMW M Team RLL’s M Hybrid V8, driven by Philipp Eng, finished in fourth place, thanks to a lap time of 1:34.575. The #6 Porsche Penske completed the top five, with Nick Tandy setting the fastest lap time of 1:34.756.

In the LMP2 category, Mikkel Jensen of TDS Racing’s Oreca 07 #11 recorded the fastest time of 1:35.531, completing 41 laps, the highest number among all 56 entries. Felipe Fraga secured second place in the category with the Riley Oreca #74, recording a time of 1:35.577. DragonSpeed’s Oreca #81 driven by Nico Varrone finished in third place with a time of 1:35.750. Tower Motorsport’s Oreca #8, piloted by Charlie Eastwood, finished in fourth place with a lap time of 1:36.447, followed by Connor Zilisch of Era Motorsport’s Oreca #18, who recorded a time of 1:36.490, leading the championship.

In the GTD Pro class, the AO Racing ‘Rexy’ Porsche 911 GT3.R #77, winner of the recent race, secured first place with Laurin Heinrich recording the fastest time of 1:45.242. The Lone Star Racing #80 team, with their Mercedes-AMG, secured second place in the combined GTD and GTD Pro field. Scott Andrews recorded the fastest lap time of 1:45.402, putting them ahead in the GTD class. The Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 #1 (GTD Pro) completed 22 laps during the session, with Bryan Sellers recording the fastest time of 1:45.590. In the GTD Pro category, Ross Gunn’s time of 1:45.764 placed the Heart of Racing Aston Martin Vantage #27 in third position. Alessio Rovera secured fifth place in the combined GTD fields with the Triarsi Competizione Ferrari 296 #023 (GTD), thanks to a lap time of 1:45.862.
