The CEO of McLaren, Zak Brown, hinted at the team’s intentions to enter the Hypercar category at Le Mans in the future. The renowned endurance race, known for its top-tier drivers and teams, has been without McLaren’s presence for quite some time. However, Brown recently discussed the possibility of a return to this prestigious event.
In recent decades, McLaren has not competed for overall victory at Le Mans. With the emergence of Lamborghini, Peugeot, Ferrari, Porsche, and other manufacturers in the Hypercar category, there have been speculations about whether McLaren would be tempted to return. Brown, however, stated that it is not a question of if, but rather when the team will make its comeback to the iconic race in the top class. Currently, McLaren has three cars competing in the LMGT3 category.
Although the 24 Hours of Le Mans is the most significant endurance motorsport event, it does not have the same appeal as Formula 1. Formula 1, being the pinnacle of motorsport, has a broader global reach. Former Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher recently admitted that he was not a fan of Le Mans during his childhood. Schumacher, who is now competing in the World Endurance Championship with Alpine, was solely focused on Formula 1 and did not develop an interest in following Le Mans or endurance races in general. However, he acknowledged the passion demonstrated by teams and drivers in this historic event.
In recent years, Le Mans has gained popularity, and the World Endurance Championship aims to attract new audiences with the arrival of several manufacturers in its top class. The 2024 edition of the race is expected to be one of the most exciting contests in its recent history.
