In a thrilling display of speed and precision, Charles Leclerc of Ferrari outshone his competitors during the second practice of the 2025 Formula 1 season-opening Australian Grand Prix. Leclerc clocked the fastest time, outpacing the McLaren duo, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Leclerc’s performance in the practice session was nothing short of spectacular, as he consistently topped the charts across both the medium- and soft-tyre qualifying simulation runs. The Ferrari driver’s prowess was evident as he managed to maintain a significant lead, despite the challenges posed by the softer C5 compound tyre.
The competition was fierce, with Leclerc’s teammate, Lewis Hamilton, trailing him by a mere four-tenths after the initial runs. However, the switch to softer compounds did little to dampen Leclerc’s performance, as he finished the session 0.124 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor, Piastri.
The star of the session was undoubtedly Leclerc, who managed to clock an impressive 1m16.439s on softs, a notable improvement from his previous best on the mid-range C4 tyre. This stunning performance put him 0.355s ahead of his previous best time.
The McLaren team wasn’t far behind with Piastri, who had recently announced his contract extension with the team, finishing a mere 0.017s behind his teammate, Norris. Norris himself had set the best time during the FP1.
The session saw the Ferraris and McLarens in a neck-and-neck race during the long runs towards the end of the session, both running on medium tyres. Not to be outdone, Racing Bulls’ Yuki Tsunoda put on a commendable performance, spending considerable time leading the leaderboard and securing fourth place, just 0.345s behind Leclerc.
Rookie Isack Hadjar of Racing Bulls also made his mark by finishing sixth, just a quarter of a second behind Tsunoda. Sandwiching Hamilton’s Ferrari, the Racing Bulls displayed impressive pace on the softer tyre, boding well for their future performances.
