Joe Roberts holds off a late charge from Manuel Gonzalez to secure his first win of the season at Mugello and close the gap to current championship leader Sergio Garcia, who finishes in fourth place.
The race start is delayed until 12:30 local time due to a red flag in the Moto3 race, resulting in a reduction of laps to two-thirds of the distance (12 laps).
Roberts gets a good start and maintains the lead into turn 1, with Alonso Lopez and Darryn Binder chasing on the American Racing bike.
Ai Ogura makes an impressive start, moving up to fourth from 12th on his MT Helmets bike. However, he drops back to seventh after struggling to keep up with the front group’s pace.
A battle between Aron Canet and Sergio Garcia on lap 3 propels Canet’s Fantic Racing bike into fifth place, allowing him to stay in contention with the front group.
Fermin Aldeguer, plagued by neck pain throughout the weekend, starts 18th on the grid. Unfortunately, he crashes early in lap 4, resulting in zero points for him. Jeremy Alcoba also crashes as a result.
Alonso Lopez, Aldeguer’s teammate at Speed Up, takes advantage of Joe Roberts’ momentary lapse to take the lead and tries to build a gap.
On lap 5, Darryn Binder crashes in sector two and sector three, ending his chances of a good result while running in fourth. He continues to struggle with the Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP team, accumulating only four points this season.
Roberts regains second place by passing Miguel Gonzalez and sets his sights on Garcia ahead.
Both Roberts and Gonzalez make mistakes on lap 9, dropping them back to third and fourth place, respectively. This allows Canet to move up to second. Canet takes advantage of an opportunity to overtake Gonzalez and takes the lead, but his time in front is short-lived.
Roberts finds a way to pass Garcia’s MT Helmets in the final sector and performs a late braking maneuver at turn 1 on lap 10, reclaiming the lead.
Roberts and Gonzalez open up a gap between themselves and the chasing pack going into the final lap. Gonzalez manages to pass Roberts at turn 1.
However, Roberts immediately responds at turn 2, finding space on the inside and successfully defending against Gonzalez for the remainder of the lap.
In a fierce battle on the final lap, Roberts emerges victorious, securing his second Moto2 win at one of his favorite circuits, with Gonzalez finishing just behind.
Lopez holds off the MT Helmets duo, Garcia and Ogura, with less than 0.3 seconds separating the three riders.
Despite briefly leading, Canet finishes in sixth place, while Celestino Vietti finishes in a solid seventh place as the top Red Bull KTM rider.
Izan Guevara delivers his best performance of the season, finishing in eighth, followed by Thai rider Somkiat Chandra in ninth.
Marco Ramirez, representing the American Racing team, secures tenth place, while Moto2 rookie Diogo Moreira achieves his best Moto2 finish in 11th place.
Jake Dixon recovers to secure 12th place, ahead of Deniz Öncü and Zonta van den Goorbergh from the RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP team.
Mario Aji earns the final point in the standings, finishing in 15th place, 13 seconds behind the leader.
