Astara, for the third time, and consecutively, is getting ready to accelerate in the Dakar, the most important and media-covered rally-raid in motorsport. The 2024 edition, taking place from January 6th to 9th, is the 46th in the competition’s history, and the 5th organized entirely in Saudi Arabia. At the controls of the two 02 Concept cars registered in the top car category (T1 Ultimate), rear-wheel drive buggies (T1.2) with 2.9-V6 2. biturbo engines of Audi origin powered by synthetic fuel – combustion without CO2 emissions! – a Spanish driver, Laia Sanz, supported by Italian Maurizio Gerini, and a Uruguayan Patricia (Pato) Pita, with Chilean Paolo Boggioni as navigator. Óscar Fuertes leads a team with more than 30 members, including three Portuguese mechanics.
The presentation of the Astara Team for the 2024 Dakar took place in Madrid, Spain, at the headquarters of the company that operates in the mobility sector and has business in 19 countries, including Portugal, where it represents car manufacturers such as Kia, Mitsubishi, Aiways, Fuso, Maxus or Isuzu – in 2022, it registered 10,803 new vehicles in our country, and the expectation for this year is growth.
Astara, with the 02 Concept from South African manufacturer Century, only aims for the “best possible result”, which means, at the start, completing the approximately 5000 km of the rally starting in Al Ula on January 5th and ending in Yanbu on the 19th of the same month, after completing a prologue and twelve timed stages, most of them in the desert dunes of the Arabian Peninsula. Especially since the favorites for victory are the usual suspects, also because they have much larger budgets and resources, such as Toyota, Audi, Prodrive, or Ford (the blue oval brand, with the Ranger T1+, makes its official debut in the Dakar in this edition…).
Nasser Al-Attyah, vincitore del rally nel 2011, 2015, 2019, 2022 e 2023, dopo la scadenza del contratto con la Toyota, si presenta al volante dell’Hunter della Prodrive, e ha come compagno di squadra Sébastien Loeb, francese con nove titoli e 80 vittorie nel WRC, ma nessuna vittoria al Dakar in sette partecipazioni, a differenza del qatariota, che ha iniziato il conto alla rovescia per la sua 20ª partecipazione in questa maratona!
Il progetto di Astara si differenzia sia per l’uso di carburante sintetico, un modo per distinguersi positivamente tra le auto in competizione, sia per il fatto di puntare su due donne alla guida delle Concept 02 con circa 300 kW (408 CV) e velocità massima limitata a 170 km/h (un’altra novità per il 2024). Sanz, 65ª nel 2023, con la Concept 01, si prepara per la sua 14ª partecipazione al Dakar, la terza consecutiva su quattro ruote, dopo undici su due (nel curriculum della spagnola, nessun ritiro e 9ª posizione nel 2015!). Pita ha debuttato l’anno scorso in un T3 (categoria in cui spiccano gli SSV) e gareggia per la prima volta in un’auto, e subito nella categoria principale della competizione.
“Possiamo essere veloci… Forse preferiremmo un tipo di percorso diverso, più veloce e con meno dune, ma siamo pronte per quello che ci aspetta”, ha assicurato Sanz, compagna di squadra di Mattias Ekström nel team di Carlos Sainz che gareggia nell’Extreme E. “Nel 2022 ho imparato molto. Questa competizione mette alla prova i tuoi limiti. Ho esperienza nei rally, ma non posso confrontare ciò che ho già fatto in Sud America con ciò che mi aspetta in Arabia Saudita. Sto realizzando un sogno e ambisco a viverlo nel migliore dei modi possibili, tappa dopo tappa, con l’obiettivo di arrivare alla fine e con una buona classifica”, ha detto l’uruguaiana figlia e nipote di ex piloti di rally. Di recente, in Marocco, il team ha svolto il test generale per il Dakar, con la grande maratona già all’orizzonte.
