Herta completed 24 laps, including the fastest lap of the day, in the practice session for the Indy 500. The weather in central Indiana was favorable for the second consecutive day, allowing all 34 IndyCar drivers to participate in the session. Turbo boost pressures in the engines were increased to simulate qualifying, giving the drivers more power to work with. They took turns making fast laps, trying to avoid the turbulence caused by other cars. Evaluating the best car of the day involved considering factors such as comfort and speed. Colton Herta set the fastest lap with an average speed of 234.974 MPH. Surprisingly, Kyle Larson, a NASCAR star making his debut in the Indy 500, had the second fastest lap even though he was not familiar with the higher levels of boost. Josef Newgarden had the fastest lap without the help of another car, and he also had the fastest four-lap average. The Penske team dominated the four-lap average tables, with Newgarden, Scott McLaughlin, and Will Power taking the top three spots. Some drivers noted that the Chevrolet engines seemed to handle the extra boost well, and the Penske team appeared to have their settings dialed in. Throughout the practice session, nearly 1,000 laps were completed, with Kyffin Simpson completing the most laps, with 46. Takuma Sato encountered setup issues and had to wait for his team to make changes. Alex Palou’s engine failed, but his team quickly replaced it, allowing him to continue racing. There was an accident during the day involving rookie Nolan Siegel, who flipped on the track. The car was turned over by the safety team, and Siegel was able to walk away unharmed. The DCR team had to prepare a backup car due to the damage sustained in the accident. In a strange incident, a snake crossed the track during the afternoon race, resulting in a brief yellow flag period to remove it. With various experiences along the pit lane, some teams will have more work to do overnight. Saturday morning will feature a one-hour practice session, followed by qualifying, which will determine positions 10 through 30 for the race.
