Max Verstappen, representing the Netherlands, dominated the Bahrain Grand Prix, opening his latest defense of the Formula 1 title. It was later revealed that Valtteri Bottas had made contact with Hulkenberg, causing him to collide with Lance Stroll, who also fell to the back of the group.
Verstappen focused on building a gap to avoid being within the DRS zone. The DRS, which allows overtaking, is now activated at the end of the first lap. Leclerc came under pressure from George Russell, who used the DRS to execute a precise overtaking maneuver on the outside of Turn 4. Perez did the same and lined up behind Leclerc. Prior to that, Lando Norris comfortably overtook Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin on the inside of Turn 1. Oscar Piastri replicated Norris’ move three laps later, pushing Alonso even further back. Russell led a group of cars fighting for second place, with Verstappen maintaining a four-second advantage.
Perez had waited behind Leclerc for several laps but capitalized on Leclerc’s mistake at Turn 10 to overtake Ferrari and secure third place on the 7th lap.
Despite Leclerc’s attempt to regain the position from Perez at Turn 1 on the following lap, Perez held firm on the inside and maintained his podium position.
Lewis Hamilton, starting in ninth, struggled initially to make progress but managed to overtake Alonso at the first corner after 10 laps.
Logan Sargeant encountered a strange incident when he locked up his tires at Turn 4, initially appearing to be out of the race until he managed to get his Williams car moving, albeit in last place.
One lap later, Carlos Sainz managed to overtake Leclerc at Turn 1, becoming the leading Ferrari on track in fourth place, while Leclerc continued to struggle.
Ferrari decided to bring Leclerc into the pits for his first stop at the end of the 11th lap, with Russell also opting for a fresh set of hard tires.
This triggered a series of pit stops on the following lap, with Perez, Piastri, and Hamilton coming in, while Leclerc made a mistake at Turn 10, running wide due to the proximity to the Sauber.
Perez managed to close the gap to Russell within the DRS zone in their battle for second place and seized the moment when Russell went deep into Turn 4 to make a successful undercut.
Russell found himself falling behind Perez, with a 4.5-second gap, and Leclerc closing in on him from behind. Leclerc was struggling with an unbalanced Ferrari car.
Mercedes advised Russell not to use his overtaking button, but Hamilton complained that his «seat was broken» as he followed behind the two McLaren cars.
A wheel nut issue during a pit stop left Bottas stranded in the Sauber pit area for over 50 seconds, causing him to drop to 19th place.
At the front of the pack, Verstappen extended his lead over Perez to over 16 seconds, with 24 laps still to go. Sainz was 3 seconds behind in the second Red Bull.
Mercedes decided to protect against the threat of being overtaken in the pits and called Russell in for a second stop. He rejoined the track ahead of Alonso.
Ferrari responded by bringing Leclerc in for a pit stop at the end of lap 34. Hamilton successfully undercut Piastri, who ran straight at Turn 1.
Red Bull waited until lap 37 to bring Perez in for his second and final pit stop. However, Perez maintained his position ahead of Sainz with a comfortable advantage.
The reigning champions brought an extra set of soft tires for the Bahrain weekend and strategically used them in the latter part of the race to gain an advantage over their competitors.
This allowed Verstappen to set the fastest lap of the race, taking the title away from Leclerc, who was still chasing Russell in fourth place.
