Max Verstappen, the race winner, celebrated in the parc ferme after the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix of the Formula 1 World Championship in Imola, Italy, on May 19, 2024. Verstappen successfully converted his pole position into a victory, despite the late challenge from Lando Norris. Charles Leclerc finished third in the race.
Before the race start, changes to Fernando Alonso’s suspension resulted in his Aston Martin being moved to the pitlane, leaving a vacant spot at the back of the grid. Due to the narrow track at Imola and the planned strategy of only one pit stop, overtaking opportunities were limited, making a good start crucial for the race outcome.
The top 10 drivers chose the Medium compound for their tires, while Sergio Perez, Zhou Guanyu, and Logan Sargeant opted for the Hards. Verstappen and Norris had a fierce battle at the start, but Verstappen ended up leading the race into turn 2. Leclerc had a slow start, allowing Carlos Sainz to challenge him. However, Leclerc managed to defend his position, while Norris protected his second place by overtaking Leclerc.
Lewis Hamilton managed to overtake Yuki Tsunoda early in the race, with both Red Bull drivers dropping two positions. Nico Hulkenberg made progress in his Haas car, moving up to eighth place, while Perez also entered the points zone.
Verstappen quickly established a two-second advantage over Norris, with Sainz and Piastri closely following Leclerc. Alonso took a risk by starting on Soft tires, but switched to the Hards after seven laps. Bottas and Albon also changed their tire choices for better durability. Unfortunately, Albon had an issue with a loose wheel and had to return to the pit lane, allowing the leaders to overtake him.
Although Albon managed to stay in last position after a pit stop, Piastri tried to overtake Sainz for fourth place. Ricciardo fell behind Perez and made a pit stop on the 11th lap to switch to Hard tires. Tsunoda and Haas responded with their own stops, but Tsunoda’s quick tire change allowed him to come back ahead of the Haas driver.
Despite Verstappen’s uncertain race prospects due to his struggles in practice, he continued to increase his lead and created a five-second gap between him and the chasing pack.
In the world of Formula 1, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez was struggling to catch the leaders. A mistake at the first Rivazza corner caused him to lose five seconds by going off track. Meanwhile, Mercedes’ George Russell decided to make an early pit stop on lap 21, with a quick 2.4-second service from his team. This put him behind Esteban Ocon on track.
Another driver, Yuki Tsunoda, also made an early stop, giving him an advantage over Nico Hulkenberg. However, Tsunoda found himself struggling to overtake Logan Sargeant and gain more positions. McLaren had a strategy to avoid their driver Lando Norris making a stop in order to prevent Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc from gaining an advantage. But Norris ended up having to pit on lap 22, putting him behind Red Bull’s Perez.
Fortunately for Norris, he was able to quickly overtake Perez and regain his position among the top five. McLaren then decided to pit their other driver, Oscar Piastri, on the following lap. Both McLaren drivers were posting impressive lap times, while Ferrari chose to stay out on track and took the lead when Max Verstappen made his pit stop.
Norris received a message over the radio informing him that Leclerc was pushing to increase the pressure on him. Norris had previously expressed concerns about the lack of speed in the McLaren car.
Tsunoda managed to create some distance between himself and the Haas car of Hulkenberg, but couldn’t resist Perez, while Leclerc was closing in on Norris, remaining less than a second behind him to take advantage of the DRS.
Hulkenberg’s pace, after his earlier pit stop, was slowing down, and Lance Stroll provided a much-needed boost for Aston Martin by overtaking the Haas driver.
Despite his efforts, Leclerc didn’t find an opportunity to overtake Norris, and a moment where he went off track at Variante Alta cost him two seconds, pushing him further back.
Verstappen was comfortably leading the race, but Norris was starting to close the gap between them. Verstappen revealed he was struggling with the Hard compound tires.
Mercedes was preparing for a late pit stop, and Russell was the first to make a second stop, putting him one position behind Hamilton.
Verstappen was dealing with some handling issues, and Norris, who had left Leclerc behind, was quickly closing in on him.
As Norris was approaching to potentially overtake Verstappen, the Dutch driver increased his pace to keep the McLaren at bay.
However, Verstappen was still struggling with car issues, and Norris was gradually closing in until a mistake at the Villeneuve chicane prevented him from using the DRS.
Verstappen had to work hard in the final laps, but managed to stay ahead of Norris and crossed the finish line to secure his third consecutive victory at Imola.
