La Unión Europea (UE) registró más de 20,400 víctimas mortales en las carreteras en 2023, y Portugal se encuentra entre los seis países con mayor número de víctimas mortales en accidentes de tráfico, continuando por debajo de la media europea, según un informe europeo.
Las estadísticas publicadas este miércoles por el Consejo Europeo de Seguridad en el Transporte (ETSC) y divulgadas por la Autoridad Nacional de Seguridad Vial (ANSR), indican que Portugal registró el año pasado 60 muertes en las carreteras por millón de habitantes, ocupando el sexto lugar desde el final de una tabla con 32 países.
Según el informe, la mortalidad más alta en 2023 se produjo en Bulgaria y Rumania, con 82 y 81 muertes en la carretera por millón de habitantes respectivamente, mientras que los países con menor número de fallecidos son Noruega y Suecia.
La ANSR señala que Portugal registró un aumento del 1.5% en el número de víctimas mortales en accidentes de tráfico en 2023 en comparación con el año anterior, aunque considerablemente inferior al registrado en 2022 en comparación con 2021 (11.1%).
«Considering the year 2019 as a reference, in 2023 there was a 4.2% reduction in the number of fatalities in Portugal compared to that year,» indicates the ANSR, emphasizing that the report shows that Portugal had a reduction in road mortality, although below the European average and still far from reaching the goals of the European Union. Remember that in 2023, Portugal recorded almost 35,000 traffic accidents that caused 468 deaths and 2437 serious injuries.
The statistics now revealed by the ETSC indicate that in 2023 there were 20,418 fatalities on EU roads, a decrease of only 1% compared to 2022, «a value that falls far short of the annual reduction of 6.1% necessary to achieve the EU’s goal of reducing the number of fatalities by 50% by 2030,» according to the ANSR.
In the release of the ETSC report, it was also announced that Finland was the winner of the 2024 prize from the European Council for Transport Safety for remarkable progress in road safety.
«Finland substantially reduced the number of deaths on the roads by 29% over the decade until 2023, while the average reduction in the European Union (EU) was only 16%,» states the ANSR statement.
The fact that Finland is «the only country in Europe that conducts an in-depth investigation of each fatal accident» is not unrelated to this significant reduction in the number of deaths on the road, concludes the statement.
