George Russell blamed an expensive lunch for leaving him «half a kilo» overweight before qualifying, stating that he could have achieved fourth place on the Imola grid without it. Russell stated: «I felt extremely pleased today. I felt strong throughout qualifying. P6 was the best possible result. It’s frustrating when you’re so close to the car in front. This weekend, I’m half a kilo overweight. You never think that would make a difference, but half a kilo would put me in P5, which would be P4 on the grid. So, I’m blaming my lunch sandwich for that.» Mercedes introduced upgrades during the Miami and Emilia Romagna Grand Prix weekends. Despite lunch preventing him from achieving a higher position than P6 in qualifying, Russell was pleased with Mercedes’ progress. He stated: «The car has felt the best it has all season, especially on such a challenging circuit like this. I feel confident. We know we’re heading in the right direction.» McLaren, on the other hand, made significant strides, according to Russell, and he even went as far as to say: «Right now, they genuinely seem to be the fastest team.» As a Mercedes engine customer, McLaren has surpassed its supplier in the past year.
