Oliver Bearman, a reserve pilot for Ferrari from the United Kingdom, made his Formula 1 debut at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in Jeddah. George Russell, a fellow pilot, praised Bearman and expressed his belief that he will soon be competing in the category. The story that brought optimism to the Formula 1 community began with Carlos Sainz falling ill with appendicitis and being unable to participate in the race. Fortunately, Sainz is recovering well after receiving treatment at a local hospital. Bearman, who was called up from Formula 2 to replace Sainz, impressed with his performance during Friday’s practice session. Despite being only 18 years old, Bearman qualified in 11th place and finished seventh in the Grand Prix, becoming the third youngest debutant in Formula 1 history. Russell, who finished sixth in the race, praised Bearman for his exceptional performance and predicted that he will join the category in the near future. Bearman’s strong performance also prevented Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris from catching up to him in the final laps of the race.
The seven-time world champion, who is scheduled to join Ferrari in 2025, acknowledged the Scuderia for producing a formidable car for Bearman’s debut. However, he also expressed admiration for the young talent’s performance.
«Ferrari is undeniably powerful, it is the closest competitor to the Red Bulls,» commented Hamilton.
«Being taken out of your usual class and immediately put into a Ferrari, a top-level team, without the luxury of extensive training and other preparations – he really stood out today and throughout the weekend.»
Norris also noted Ferrari’s overall performance when discussing Bearman’s achievements at the Grand Prix.
Despite finishing less than three seconds behind Bearman, the McLaren driver was impressed by his compatriot.
